Fresh protests broke out at Gangabari in Makum, Assam on June 16, as demonstrators once again imposed a road blockade under the banners of the All Tea Students’ Association (ATSA) and the Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam (AASA), intensifying demands for justice following the death of an alleged assault victim.

The renewed agitation followed the death of Mukut Orang, who succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh.

According to reports, Orang was allegedly assaulted on Friday by Imran Siddiqui, owner of a restaurant identified as Urban Tasty. The incident had earlier sparked public demonstrations, with protesters staging road blockades in front of the restaurant for two consecutive days.

Protesters alleged that the accused had failed to bear the medical expenses of the injured individual and demanded immediate police action.

Following the escalation of public pressure, Makum Police arrested Imran Siddiqui and sealed the restaurant.

After Orang’s death, demonstrators resumed protests at Gangabari, demanding justice for the deceased and seeking one-time financial assistance for his family. Protesters also called for capital punishment for the accused.

The incident has triggered widespread public outrage and heightened tension in the locality, with security agencies monitoring the situation to maintain law and order.

Authorities are yet to issue any further official statement regarding additional legal proceedings or compensation demands.
