PM Modi concludes five-nation tour, gifts Assam’s Muga Silk stole to Italian PM Giorgia Meloni

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has concluded his five-nation visit covering the United Arab Emirates, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Italy, during which India’s diplomatic outreach was accompanied by the promotion of traditional Indian cultural heritage.

During his visit to Italy, Modi presented a Muga Silk stole to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The gesture highlighted Assam’s renowned Muga silk tradition, often referred to as the “Golden Silk” of the Brahmaputra Valley in Northeast India.

Muga silk is considered one of the rarest and most prestigious natural textiles produced in India. Known for its distinctive natural golden sheen, the fabric is traditionally produced without artificial dyes, reflecting a long-standing sustainable weaving practice native to Assam.

The textile is also recognised for its durability and strength, with Muga silk regarded among the world’s strongest natural fibres. Its natural lustre deepens over time, while its moisture-absorbing and UV-resistant properties contribute to its versatility and comfort.

The presentation of the stole also underscored the cultural connection between Assam’s traditional craftsmanship and Italy’s globally recognised legacy of luxury textiles and design. The gift formed part of India’s broader effort to showcase regional heritage and indigenous craftsmanship during high-level international engagements.
