Although allergies are often associated with the outdoors, there are things inside our homes that trigger them too. Carpets and rugs trap dust mites, dander, pet hair, mold spores, and pollen. Even that thin layer of dust on your hardwood and tile floors can affect your allergies. If you want to prevent sneezing, a stuffy nose, and watery eyes, you’ll need a high-quality vacuum.

Some vacuums are better than others at preventing or lessening allergy issues. A vacuum with a high suction capability can make a huge difference, but only if they’re outfitted with HEPA filters that prevent dust and dirt that’s been suctioned from being released back in your home.

Shark PowerDetect Upright Vacuum

The Shark PowerDetect Upright vacuum may be bulky, but as an upright vacuum, it has a stronger suction power than stick vacuums. I experienced this firsthand on thick carpets, medium-pile rugs, hardwood floors, and laminate floors. I was astounded by how much dirt, debris, and hair it picked up from my parents’ carpets.

What sets this vacuum apart is the Detect mode which adjusts the suction based on the floor type and how dirty it is and informs you when the floor is clean by turning the lights on the vacuum head from purple to white. The dust bin is quite large and has an Anti-Allergen Complete Seal with HEPA filtration which means it seals and traps 99.99% of dust, dander, and allergens. You can also break down the Shark PowerDetect Upright vacuum and use the different attachments to clean your furniture, ceiling, and tight corners, where allergy-inducing particles sit.

Roborock Qrevo Curv 2 Pro robot vacuum in reviewer's home

Roborock Qrevo Curv 2 Pro

If you’re really sensitive to allergies, consider supplementing your regular vacuum with a robot vacuum and schedule it to clean your home once a day. Our pick is the Roborock Qrevo Curv 2 Pro because it does a superb job cleaning carpets and has mopping capabilities which can assist in picking up dust and pollen from your hard floors. The washable filter in the dust bin traps dust, dirt, and pollen inside the robot as it cleans.

When it's finished cleaning, the Roborock Qrevo Curv 2 Pro returns to a dock where it automatically removes the dirt and debris into a sealed dust bag and cleans the mop pads with hot water. Whenever the dust bag is full, it seals completely when removed so that dirt, dust, pollen, and debris doesn’t escape into your home before you throw it in the trash. If you can’t justify the high price tag of the Roborock Qrevo Curv 2 Pro, you might consider the eufy x10 Pro Omni.

Shark PowerDetect cordless vacuum in its auto-empty base

Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick Vacuum

Stick vacuums are convenient, but they typically don’t have the kind of suction power you need to battle allergies. That said, the Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick Vacuum will be more helpful than others in removing dust and pollen. In my testing, I found it could pick up small and large particles on various floor types, thanks to its ability to automatically adjust the suction when it detects unseen dirt, dust, and pollen.

The lights on the vacuum head turn from purple to white to indicate the floor is clean. With a bendable wand, you can more easily reach allergy-inducing particles under furniture. Not only is the vacuum outfitted with felt and washable foam filters, but it also has a HEPA filter.

You can order the Shark PowerDetect Cordless Stick Vacuum with or without the AutoEmpty Dock, but I would highly recommend the dock for those with allergies. When cleaning is complete, you set the vacuum on the dock, and it automatically removes dust, dirt, and debris into a sealed dust bag.

Miele Guard L1 Comfort XL cyclinder vacuum

Miele Guard L1 Comfort XL

Bagless vacuums are quickly becoming the norm, but unfortunately, when you empty the dustbins in the trash, dust and pollen that you just suctioned up tends to escape back into your home. That’s why bagged vacuums like the Miele Guard L1 series may be a better option. All suctioned materials make their way to the Miele Guard L1 Comfort XL’s sealed HyClean Air TU vacuum bag, which has a filter performance of 99.99%. Once the bag is full and you’re ready to throw it away, it seals as it's removed, preventing allergy-inducing materials from going into the air.

Although you’ll have to move the Miele Guard L1 Comfort XL from one spot to the next while also being mindful of the cord, its suction power is like that of an upright vacuum (i.e. super powerful). With automatic floor detection, it changes the suction level depending on whether the floor is hardwood or carpet. The various attachments can also be used to deep clean furniture which might be trapping allergens.
