Proton Mail's Easy Switch Eliminates Gmail Migration Para...
Annemarije de Boer · 2026-06-03 · via Gadget Review

New feature imports Gmail history and keeps old address active within Proton’s encrypted system

Switching email providers feels like changing your Social Security number — theoretically possible, but practically nightmarish. You’d need to update dozens of accounts, notify every contact, and probably still miss something important. Proton Mail’s new Easy Switch feature tackles this exact paralysis, letting you escape Gmail’s data collection without losing access to your established email identity.

How the Gmail Bridge Actually Works

Easy Switch imports your Gmail history while keeping your old address functional inside Proton’s encrypted environment.

The feature pulls your existing Gmail emails, calendars, and contacts directly into Proton Mail through a simple account connection. More importantly, it keeps your Gmail address active — you can send and receive messages from that familiar @gmail.com address while operating inside Proton’s encrypted environment.

  • Free accounts support one Gmail connection
  • Paid plans handle up to three addresses

Think of it as having your Gmail identity running on Proton’s privacy-focused infrastructure rather than Google’s ad-targeting machinery.

Privacy Gains Without Address Chaos

Your Gmail stays reachable while Proton automatically blocks trackers and strips advertising elements from incoming messages.

Connecting your Gmail to Proton doesn’t give Google access to your new encrypted inbox, according to Proton. Instead, you get immediate privacy benefits:

  • Automatic tracking users blocking
  • Removal of advertising-related elements from messages

Your contacts can keep emailing your Gmail address without knowing you’ve switched providers. No awkward “I’ve moved to ProtonMail” announcements required — like having your cake and eating it too, except the cake doesn’t track your eating habits.

The Switching Friction Problem Solved

Easy Switch eliminates the biggest barrier preventing privacy-conscious users from leaving Gmail’s surveillance ecosystem.

This approach recognizes that email addresses become deeply embedded in your digital life — from work systems to subscription services to family contacts. Rather than forcing a clean break, Proton lets you gradually transition while maintaining continuity.

It’s the kind of practical solution that could finally make Gmail alternatives viable for users who care about privacy but can’t afford computer problems. Sometimes the best way to escape surveillance capitalism isn’t through dramatic exits, but through bridges that make the jump actually feasible.
