Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia didn’t leave any room for interpretation when addressing the latest wave of trade speculation surrounding Devin Booker.

Speaking at his end-of-season press conference, Ishbia delivered a forceful, emotional defense of the franchise cornerstone amid growing national chatter about Booker’s long-term future in Phoenix.

“Devin Booker is our franchise player,” Ishbia said. “He’s going to be here. He’s going to lead us to a championship here in Phoenix. That’s what he’s going to do.”

The remarks come after a surge of debate across national outlets, including ESPN, where personalities floated the idea of Booker potentially fitting alongside Cade Cunningham with the Detroit Pistons.

Ishbia pushed back strongly against that narrative, making clear the organization has no intention of entertaining such discussions.

“I’ll ride into a fire with Devin Booker,” Ishbia said. “He’s great for the city, great for the community, and he’s our guy. The national media says stuff sometimes — it’s just ridiculous.”

The passionate tone underscored what the Suns have consistently maintained internally: Booker remains the face of the franchise and central to any championship aspirations.

National Debate Fuels Questions About Booker’s Ceiling

The speculation didn’t emerge in a vacuum.

On ESPN’s First Take, Stephen A. Smith questioned whether Booker should consider leaving Phoenix in pursuit of a clearer championship path.

“I need to see that championship mindset draped all over his persona,” Smith said. “I don’t see that right now.”

Former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins went further, suggesting Booker may be better suited as a secondary option rather than a franchise-leading “No. 1.”

“I believe Devin Booker is a certified No. 2,” Perkins said, pointing to the Western Conference’s elite tier that includes Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, Luka Dončić and Victor Wembanyama.

Those critiques gained traction following Phoenix’s early playoff exit, intensifying scrutiny on both Booker’s role and the team’s roster construction.

Booker Production Remains Elite Despite Efficiency Dip

Despite the noise, Booker’s production continues to anchor the Suns.

The five-time All-Star averaged 26.1 points and 6.0 assists during the 2025-26 season while leading Phoenix to a 45-37 record. However, his efficiency — particularly from 3-point range — has dipped over the past two seasons, contributing to broader questions about sustainability at the top tier.

Still, Booker’s résumé remains strong. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist with Team USA Basketball and was among the most efficient shooters during the 2024 international run.

Suns’ Financial Reality Limits Trade Scenarios

Even if the Suns wanted to explore major roster changes, their financial structure presents significant obstacles.

According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Phoenix lacks the flexibility to make sweeping moves.

“They don’t have a lot of assets, they don’t have their draft picks, and they signed Devin Booker to a contract that will approach $70 million,” Windhorst said.

Booker’s two-year, $154 million extension — which made him the highest-paid player in the league — further reinforces the team’s long-term commitment while simultaneously limiting trade feasibility.

For Ishbia, the message was simple: the Suns are not pivoting away from Booker — they are doubling down.

“We’re going to build the right team around him,” Ishbia said. “He’s going to get better, and we’re going to get better as an organization.”

In a league driven by constant movement and speculation, Phoenix is taking a clear stance.
