Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach is sharing new insight into Travis Kelce’s future, revealing the team knew much earlier than the public that the veteran tight end planned to return for another season.

After the Chiefs’ 2025 campaign ended, there was widespread speculation about whether Kelce would retire. But according to Veach, that uncertainty did not last long internally.

Brett Veach Says Travis Kelce Made Decision Quickly

In an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio, Veach said any questions about Kelce’s future were resolved almost immediately after the season ended.

“When you’re going through the season that we had, certainly like mid-November, early December, there was probably some question in my mind,” Veach said. “I will say those questions were alleviated almost immediately.”

Veach recalled a conversation that took place shortly after the team’s final game.

“We played in Vegas last game of the season. We came back here that Monday, we had player exit interviews and Travis popped into the office,” Veach explained. “We talked about a lot of stuff on the coaching staff, on the roster staff, but he basically said, ‘I’m not going out like this. I’m gonna take a few weeks off here, but let’s get in touch and let’s plan on me being here.’”

Veach said that the conversation gave the organization clarity right away.

“So, even though the media kind of went through will he return or won’t he return, I think internally we knew he was coming back right away,” he said. “24 hours later after the last game of the season, I knew 100 percent that he’d be back.”

Kelce later agreed to a new contract in early March, but Veach said the early decision helped the team approach free agency with a clear plan.

“So, we knew early on that he was coming back, which was very helpful and beneficial for us because we attacked our free agency plan,” Veach said. “We already kind of put away and allocated for Travis. It helped free us up to be more decisive and carry through with our plan.”

Veach also pointed to Kelce’s competitive nature and his connection with quarterback Patrick Mahomes as factors in his decision.

“He’s such a competitor. Him and Pat have almost a brother-like relationship. It’s not even a teammate relationship,” Veach said. “I think there’s an element of Travis wanting to see Pat through this rehab process.”

Before Kelce made his decision public, Mahomes was asked about the possibility that the 2025 season could be his teammate’s last.

“Every season that I’ve had with him these last few years, I try to cherish because you never know,” Mahomes said. “He got himself in great shape this year and he’s played great football, and he’ll have the option to do whatever he wants to do after this season.”

Mahomes also emphasized Kelce’s focus during the season.

“I know one thing is he’ll give everything he has the rest of this season to try and give us a chance to make a playoff run,” he said.

Kelce had previously stated that he wanted to make a decision about his future before free agency began, giving the organization time to plan accordingly.

“Seeing my brother go through it, and seeing how the league works, the season re-starts in April, and I want to give the Chiefs a good opportunity, whether I come back or not,” Kelce said. “I’d like to make that decision before they’ve got to get draft picks and free agency opens.”

While Veach did not speculate on how long Kelce plans to continue playing, the veteran tight end is expected to remain a key part of the Chiefs’ offense heading into the 2026 season.
