Ex-Broncos QB Russell Wilson Makes Unexpected Career Anno...

Russell Wilson is back on a different kind of field.

The former Denver Broncos quarterback made an unexpected baseball appearance with the Savannah Bananas at Yankee Stadium, stepping into the batter’s box for one of the most popular traveling shows in sports. Wilson announced the moment afterward with a nod to his baseball past and to Bananas owner Jesse Cole.

“Fun Times with the Fans! My kids loved the day! Thanks Jesse Cole for the Call! I remember you were my GM when I was 19 years old! Proud of the movement you’ve built!” Wilson wrote on X, tagging the Savannah Bananas.

The moment gave Broncos fans another look at one of the more unusual chapters in the former Denver quarterback’s career.

Wilson was introduced on the broadcast as a “10-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion” before taking his at-bat. The plate appearance ended with a broken bat, a groundout and a Banana Ball-style trick play near first base, according to the broadcast transcript.

Russell Wilson’s Baseball Career Makes Savannah Bananas Appearance More Than a Cameo

Wilson’s Bananas appearance was not just a random celebrity drop-in.

Before he became an NFL star, Wilson was a legitimate baseball prospect. The Colorado Rockies selected Wilson in the fourth round of the 2010 MLB draft, and he spent time in the minor leagues before committing fully to football. His baseball rights later moved to the Texas Rangers and eventually the New York Yankees.

That is why the Yankee Stadium setting mattered. Wilson has long had a connection to the Yankees, including a past spring training appearance after New York acquired his rights from Texas.

The Bananas appearance was different. This was not about Wilson trying to restart a baseball career or prove he could still hit professional pitching. It was an entertainment event, and Wilson leaned into it with his family in attendance.

It also connected directly to Cole. The Bananas broadcast noted that Wilson played for Cole’s Gastonia Grizzlies summer college baseball team in 2009. Wilson’s own post referenced that history, saying Cole was his general manager when Wilson was 19.

Broncos Fans Know Russell Wilson’s Career Has Taken Several Turns

For Broncos fans, any Wilson appearance still carries extra weight because of how quickly his time in Denver unraveled.

The Broncos acquired Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 in a blockbuster trade and later gave him a massive extension. Denver released him after just two seasons, absorbing one of the largest dead-money hits in NFL history. ESPN reported the Broncos took an $85 million dead-money charge over two seasons after moving on from Wilson.

That remains the backdrop whenever Wilson resurfaces publicly. His Denver tenure began with Super Bowl-level expectations and ended with a benching, a release and a franchise reset under head coach Sean Payton.

The Bananas cameo is obviously much lighter than that. But it still fits into the larger post-Broncos story. Wilson has gone from franchise savior in Denver to veteran quarterback looking for the next phase of his football career, while also continuing to embrace the public-facing, multi-sport brand that has followed him for years.

Russell Wilson’s Career Move Keeps Him in the Spotlight

Wilson’s appearance with the Savannah Bananas does not mean he is leaving football for baseball.

It does show that Wilson’s baseball past remains part of his identity. Not many quarterbacks have been Super Bowl champions, Pro Bowlers and fourth-round MLB draft picks. Even fewer can step into Yankee Stadium with the Bananas and have the moment feel connected to a real piece of their athletic history.
