The third single from Charli XCX’s forthcoming Music, Fashion, Film dropped with a titillating video directed by frequent collaborator Aidan Zamiri. While Brat summer was all Aperol Spritzes, cigarettes, and dawn-busting raves, this visual signals a season that revels in strawberries and cream, self-pleasuring to smut, and rolling in the hay.
“Here’s the truth and I gotta be honest, I’m not a bad girl anymore, I promise,” she sings, carrying out a series of household chores that slide into the sensual and increasingly provocative. (Before giving in to read something horny on her Kindle and get off.) Fashion, by Charli’s longtime stylist Chris Horan, followed a similarly horny, pastoral, tongue-in-cheek sartorial rhythm. And while there’s a lyrical nod to French label A.P.C (a go-to brand for a particular kind of east London girl), no fashions seem to be present: “My friend Rostam told me I dressed like a slut, so now I shop at A.P.C.”
To stomp around a muddy patch, Charli wears a custom turquoise leather racer-style fit from Chrome Hearts. As close-up shots show, the jacket features a sterling silver crossball snap closure, zippered cuffs, and tonal signature cross patches. The pants are boot-cut with the Chrome Hearts flerknee leg design. She wore a black version of the custom set for her “Rock Music” music video.

Many of the pieces Charli wears are via London-based, Ukraine-born designer Natasha Zinko, known for her warped and whorling takes on reworked staples and tactile fabric combos that clothe her own imaginative cast of characters season to season.

To suds up a greenhouse window, Charli wears a wilted rose-print, longsleeve mini-dress by Zinko. Riding a roundabout, she wears an N.Z. white corseted blouse with billowing sleeves, a hot pink bra, and black hotpants. Back from a spot of grocery shopping, a shrunken, ruched teal velvety blouse (dubbed the ‘Shrunken Blouska’ by Zinko), black pants, and strappy khaki heels. (Zinko’s pieces will be developed further for her London show this September.)

Among the laundry she’s pegging up are pieces from across her artistic eras. Horan, over on his Instagram Stories, dropped the details: a ruffled lilac crop top and pants co-ord worn for a Pop 2 performance in Los Angeles back in 2018; there’s a polka-dot silk scarves dress from All-In that she wore in the “party 4 u” video; and a black t-shirt printed with the graphic “Me&AG&George&Sophie&Hudmo” which was part of her Brat merch.
“Wink Wink” follows “SS26,” a visual that was a who’s who of the fashion. Staged as a runway show, it’s an if-you-know-you-know endeavor when clocking the front row: iconic fashion editor Carine Roitfeld, supermodel Debra Shaw, and Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello (Charli xcx was just appointed as a YSL beauty ambassador), as well as PR powerhouse Lucien Pagès, legendary sound producer Michel Gauber, and some of Charli’s favorite indie designers, like Benjamin Barron and Bror August Vestbø of August Barron.
Sexy, self-referential, subversively stylish, and always a little bit silly: Charli XCX at her best.
