Among summer’s biggest sandal trends, one style remains a faithful constant: the double-buckle. The laidback shoe has cemented its status over the years as a warm-weather essential for celebrity devotees and fashion editors alike.
Probably the most well known in the category is the humble Birkenstock Arizona, which received a major rebrand when Kate Moss wore a pair in her breakout cover shoot for The Face in 1990. Soon after, Marc Jacobs famously featured the double-buckle Arizona sandal throughout his now-infamous 1993 grunge collection for Perry Ellis, instantly transforming the hippie style into a fashion staple—making wearable and comfortable sandals feel undeniably cool.

Since then, seemingly every fashion house has offered its own interpretation of a double-buckle sandal. Phoebe Philo debuted a pair of strapped fur-lined shoes in 2013 during her tenure at Céline, a riff on the beloved “ugly-chic” sandals that reignited the shoe’s relevancy. More recently, The Row’s buckle slide has become an editor favorite—prized for its minimalist design and understated appeal.
Unlike flip-flops and T-strap sandals, which look cute but offer little in the way of actual support, the appeal of the double-buckle slide is the ability to deliver comfort, practicality, and polish in equal measure. Celebrities can’t get seem to get enough of the style either. Jennifer Lawrence has been seen wearing a beige suede version from Pierre Hardy in New York—a pair that’s remained in her shoe rotation for years, further proving their enduring appeal. (She’s already styled them with a teal cardigan and white poplin pants, and a graphic T-shirt and pink studded pants this summer, giving us plenty of summer-in-the-city outfit inspiration.)
Dakota Johnson is another noted fan of Arizona sandals, often incorporating them into her off-duty wardrobe of white T-shirts and black pants, while Julianne Moore favors both classic Birkenstocks and contemporary strappy takes, such as the studded Boden style from Khaite, which she pairs with her roster of chic minimalist basics.
If you haven’t yet found a pair, there’s no better time to grab one than now. The summer season means you’re spoiled for choice—from suede to leather to touches of raffia—all of which are equally suited for traveling, the office commute, or weekend dressing.
