Toy Story 5 dominated the box office this weekend, proving that even over 30 years later, those anthropomorphic toys still have our hearts.

Directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Finding Dory, WALL-E), with a screenplay written by Stanton and Kenna Harris, this is the fifth film in Pixar’s animated franchise, which began back in 1995 with Toy Story. After just one weekend in theaters, the film has already made over $312 million worldwide. You can bet there will be a Toy Story 6 with that kind of money!

Toy Story 5 picks up after the events of Toy Story 4, which saw Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) leave his new owner Bonnie to help Bo Peep reconnect abandoned toys to their owners. These days, Jessie (voiced by Joan Cusack) is in charge of Bonnie’s room, with Buzz Lightyear (voiced by Tim Allen) as her No. 2. But there’s trouble afoot when Bonnie gets a shiny new toy with a screen, a Lilypad (voiced by Greta Lee) and forgets about her boring, old, screen-less toys.

Like many Pixar films, Toy Story 5 addresses philosophical concerns of the modern day (ie; tech destroying the younger generation), making the film just as appealing to adults as it is to kids. Where to watch Toy Story 5 at home:

You can’t watch Toy Story 5 at home at the moment. Right now, the only place to watch Toy Story 5 is in a movie theater. You can find a showing at a movie theater near you via Fandango. That said, we do expect to see Toy Story 5 streaming on Disney+ eventually.

Disney+ offers a number of subscription options, so you can find the one that works for you. With ads, a subscription costs $11.99/month; without ads, it’s $18.99/month or $189.99/year.

When does Toy Story 5 come out on Disney Plus?

The Toy Story 5 Disney+ release date has not yet been announced, we can make an educated guess as to when the movie will be streaming based on previous Disney releases.

One recent Disney movie, Zootopia 2, was released on premium video-on-demand about two months after opening in theaters, and began streaming on Disney+ a little over three months after opening in theaters. If Toy Story 5 follows a similar release strategy, you may see Toy Story 5 available to buy and rent on digital platforms around late August 2026, and streaming on Disney+ around late September 2026.

But this is all speculation. The streaming release of Pixar movies varies by title.

How long will Toy Story 5 be in theaters?

We don’t know exactly how long Toy Story 5 will be in theaters, but our best guess is that the film will be in theaters until at least late August 2026.

Another animated Disney sequel, Zootopia 2, stayed in theaters for about two months, from late November to late January. Toy Story 5 is already a bigger box office hit for Disney than Zootopia 2, so we suspect Disney will want to keep the film in theaters for at least two months—aka until late August—if not longer.

That said, while box office plays a factor in how long movies stay in theaters, another factor is how many new movie titles are available to replace them. Summer movie season is heating up, and Disney has some big titles on the way, including Moana on July 10 and Super Troopers 3 on August 7.

If you want to make sure to see the Toy Story 5 movie in theaters, our recommendation is to get to the theater sooner rather than later. This one will probably play for a while, but you never know, these days!
