Shocking photos show the horrific damage a plane sustained after flying into a severe hailstorm that forced the captain to abort the flight.

The Airbus A320 had departed Poland’s Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport on April 21 and was en route to an undisclosed location when the aircraft encountered a violent thunderstorm.

The pilot attempted to circumvent the inclement conditions, only to fly straight into an onslaught of hail, which severely battered the aircraft, Jam Press reported. The airline has yet to be identified.

Left with few other options, the pilot made a midair U-turn and returned to its point of departure, landing safely.

However, the airplane didn’t emerge from the ice storm unscathed. Footage released by Polish aviation maintenance firm LS Technics showed the extent of the damage, including a fuselage that was pockmarked with craters and a gaping hole in the nose cone.

In several places, the paint had peeled away, exposing the underlying structure.

The frozen pellets also buffeted the wing’s leading edges and horizontal stabilizers, while damage was recorded to the weather radar antennas and glide-path system inside the radar dome — components that are essential for navigation and landing.

The aircraft is currently stationed at Katowice, where it will likely undergo extensive repairs before it is fit to fly the friendly skies again.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew members.

Neither Polish aviation authorities nor the unidentified carrier has released a statement regarding the scary scenario.

However, a rep for LS Technics dubbed hail “one of the most serious threats” to airplanes, capable of causing catastrophic structural damage within seconds.

Even brief encounters with large hailstones can put a modern jet out of service.

Fortunately, hailstorms this severe are rare and are generally caused when airplanes fly into the nucleus of a developing thunderstorm cell while ascending, as was likely the case with the ill-fated flight.

This wasn’t, in fact, the first time an aircraft has sustained severe damage after flying into the eye of a hailstorm.

In 2024, an Austrian Airlines flight across Europe encountered a powerful, surprise mid-air ice shower that tore away part of the airplane’s nose and left the cockpit windows covered in cracks.

One of the passengers estimated that the plane took about two minutes to fly through the hailstorm, which caused “phones and cups” to fly around the plane, prompting some flyers to scream.
