St. John’s foray into the international market continued Tuesday.
The Johnnies landed a verbal commitment from Senegalese forward Babacar Sane, as first reported by The Post. The 6-foot-8, 230-pound Sane has been playing in the top professional league in Germany. He is a physical and versatile forward who is at his best in transition attacking the basket and can defend several positions. It is uncertain whether the 22-year-old Sane will have one or two years of eligibility.
“With all these kids, you have to do your homework — not only film, but I sent [assistant coach] Ricky Johns out to see him play to back up what my people were saying, from [former Louisville player] Gorgui Dieng to all my Senegal connections,” Rick Pitino said. “He came back, he loved him. Physical specimen, terrific athlete, explosive, strong, plays multiple positions.”
Sane previously spent two years with G-League Ignite, the developmental team for top prospects. This year, Sane is averaging 10.1 points and 3.8 rebounds, and is shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from 3-point range for MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg in Germany. Sane also played for the Senegalese senior national team and posted 7.5 points and 3.4 rebounds across 16 games in FIBA World Cup and AfroBasket qualifiers.
