Canadian travel to US picks up for first time since trade...

For the first time since Canadians started boycotting travel to the US to protest the trade war, trips south of the border have started to pick up — slowly.

Travel to the US inched up 1.4% in April compared to the same month last year, with 1.8 million Canucks visiting the Land of the Free, according to monthly data released by Statistics Canada this week.

The increase — the first since December 2024 after months of decline — was driven by car travel, which rose 6% in April, according to the data.

But overall, Canadian visitation remains down 25% from 2024 levels of 39 million visitors, according to Statistics Canada — and the U.S. Travel Association’s newly released forecast projects Canadian visitor numbers won’t return to pre-trade war levels until 2029.

The Canadian dollar is up slightly, to 73 cents on the dollar. It tumbled to a two-decade low of 68 cents in February 2025 when President Trump first threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, prompting many to vacation home instead. Last year, total visits dropped to 29 million.

Tourism hotspots tried to lure Canadians, such as a trio of Las Vegas hotels that began accepting the Canadian dollar at par in March.

Last year, Canadians began cancelling their American vacations en masse to protest the impact of tariffs on their country’s economy — and threats to make the Great White North the 51st state of the US.

A whopping 3 million fewer travelers crossed from Canada into the Empire State alone in 2025.

Even schools and sports teams cancelled trips, and air travel demand slumped more than 25%, forcing airlines to cut routes.
