How I Replaced 4 Heavy WooCommerce Plugins with a 15KB Vanilla JS Solution 🚀
tophive · 2026-06-12 · via DEV Community

If you've ever built or managed a WooCommerce store, you know the drill. The client wants to increase sales, so what do we do?

We install a Side Cart plugin to make browsing easier.
Then we add an Order Bump plugin to increase the Average Order Value (AOV).
Oh, and we definitely need an Abandoned Cart Recovery plugin.
And maybe a Checkout Field Editor to clean up the messy default fields.

Suddenly, the site is loading 4 different jQuery libraries, 12 stylesheets, and taking 4+ seconds to reach Time to Interactive (TTI). The Core Web Vitals are screaming in red, and the client is unhappy because the site feels "sluggish."

I faced this exact problem last month. I decided I'd had enough of the "plugin spaghetti" and set out to build a single, highly optimized solution.

Here is how I built CartLane—an all-in-one conversion booster that replaces all those heavy plugins with a modern React backend and a blazing-fast Vanilla JS frontend.

The Problem with the WooCommerce Ecosystem 🐢

Don't get me wrong, WooCommerce is incredibly powerful. But its ecosystem is still heavily reliant on legacy code. Most of the popular checkout/funnel plugins on the market today:

Rely on jQuery: They enqueue heavy jQuery scripts for simple UI toggles or AJAX requests.

Bloated CSS: They load massive stylesheets globally, even on non-eCommerce pages like the "About Us" page.

Conflict-Prone: When 4 different plugins try to hook into the woocommerce_checkout_order_review action, things break.

The Solution: Vanilla JS & React ⚡

My goal was simple: Build the ultimate funnel and checkout optimizer, but make it invisible to Google PageSpeed Insights.

1. The Frontend: Strict Vanilla JS

For the customer-facing side (Side Cart, Order Bumps, Checkout modifications), I completely banned jQuery.

Instead of $.ajax(), I used the native fetch() API for adding items to the cart and calculating shipping limits.
Instead of jQuery animations (slideToggle), I used CSS transitions triggered by simple class toggles (classList.toggle('is-active')).

The Result: The entire frontend JavaScript bundle for CartLane compiles down to less than 15KB (gzipped). It loads instantly and doesn't block the main thread.

2. The Backend: React SPA (Single Page Application)

Store owners hate refreshing pages to save settings. For the WordPress admin panel, I built a headless-style dashboard using React and Tailwind CSS.

By hooking into the WordPress REST API (/wp-json/cartlane/v1/), the dashboard allows store owners to build order bumps, customize their side cart, and view analytics in real-time without a single page reload.

It feels like using a premium SaaS product, not a traditional WordPress plugin.

(A sneak peek of the React Dashboard)

3. Smart Asset Loading

One of the biggest mistakes plugin developers make is loading assets globally. In CartLane, I specifically ensured that the CSS and JS files are only enqueued when necessary. The side cart scripts only load if WooCommerce is active, and checkout scripts only load on is_checkout(). The blog and homepage remain completely untouched.

What Can This 15KB Solution Actually Do? 🛠️

It turns out, you don't need megabytes of code to build powerful eCommerce features. CartLane handles:

AJAX Side Cart: A beautiful slide-out drawer with a dynamic "Free Shipping" progress bar.

Order Bumps (Upsells): 1-click cross-sells displayed right on the checkout page to increase AOV instantly.

Abandoned Cart Recovery: An automated system that tracks lost checkouts and sends a 3-step email sequence.

Checkout Optimization: Trust badges, cleaner fields, and conversion-focused UI tweaks.

The Verdict: Performance + Conversion = Sales 💰

As developers, we often have to choose between adding marketing features (which slows down the site) or keeping the site fast (but losing potential sales). By utilizing modern JavaScript and React within WordPress, we no longer have to compromise.

Try It Out! (I Need Your Feedback) 🙏

I just launched the free core version of CartLane on the WordPress.org repository.

If you build WooCommerce sites for clients or run your own store, I would love for you to take it for a spin. Test the speed, check out the React dashboard, and let me know how it compares to your current stack.
