Postmortem: Tauri 2.0 Update Bug Broke Our Desktop App for 10k Users for 3 Hours

On October 17, 2024, at 14:22 UTC, our team deployed a routine update to our Tauri 2.0-based desktop application, used by over 10,000 active monthly users. Within 12 minutes, we saw a 100% error rate for app launch, with users unable to access core functionality. The incident lasted 3 hours and 7 minutes, fully resolved by 17:29 UTC. This postmortem details the root cause, our response, and steps we’ve taken to prevent recurrence.

Incident Summary

Our desktop app, built with Tauri 2.0 (migration completed in September 2024), delivers offline-first project management tools to small teams. The October 17 update included a patch for Tauri’s core IPC handler, intended to fix a minor memory leak in v2.0.1. Post-deployment, all users on v2.0.2 (the new version) saw a blank white screen on launch, with no error logs written to disk. User reports flooded our support channel within 15 minutes of release.

Root Cause Analysis

Initial debugging pointed to a mismatch between Tauri’s updated IPC serialization logic and our custom Rust-based command handler. The Tauri 2.0.2 update introduced a breaking change to the invoke function’s payload validation: the update enforced strict UTF-8 encoding for all string payloads, whereas our app sent base64-encoded binary data via the invoke channel for legacy compatibility with v1.x plugins.

When the app attempted to send the base64 payload (which includes non-UTF-8 padding characters in edge cases), Tauri 2.0.2’s new validation layer threw an unhandled panic in the Rust backend, crashing the core process before the webview could initialize. Critically, the panic was not caught by our existing error boundary, as Tauri’s 2.0 update moved IPC handling to a separate thread that did not propagate errors to the frontend error handler.

We confirmed the issue by rolling back a test device to v2.0.1, which restored functionality immediately. Further review of Tauri’s 2.0.2 release notes revealed the validation change was listed as a “minor patch” with no breaking change warning, leading our CI pipeline to auto-approve the update.

Incident Response Timeline

All times in UTC:

  • 14:22: Update to Tauri 2.0.2 deployed to production via our CD pipeline, triggered by a merged patch PR.
  • 14:34: First user report of blank screen on launch via Intercom.
  • 14:41: Engineering team identifies 100% crash rate for v2.0.2 builds via Sentry alerts.
  • 14:47: Decision made to roll back to previous Tauri 2.0.1 build, but CD pipeline fails due to cached artifacts.
  • 15:02: Manual rollback to v2.0.1 completed, but 30% of users still see update prompts for v2.0.2 due to CDN caching.
  • 15:28: CDN cache purged for all Tauri build artifacts; update prompts stop.
  • 16:15: All users confirmed on v2.0.1, crash rate drops to 0%.
  • 17:29: Root cause fully identified, patch for our payload serialization deployed to staging.

Lessons Learned

We identified three critical gaps in our release process:

  • Insufficient breaking change checks: We relied on Tauri’s semantic versioning (v2.0.2 is a patch version) to indicate no breaking changes, but the update included an undocumented validation change.
  • Lack of canary releases: We deployed the update to 100% of users immediately, with no staged rollout to a small subset first.
  • Incomplete error propagation: Tauri 2.0’s new thread model for IPC was not accounted for in our error handling, leading to silent crashes.
  • CDN cache mismanagement: Our CDN was configured to cache build artifacts for 24 hours, prolonging user exposure to the broken update.

Prevention Steps

We’ve implemented the following changes to avoid similar incidents:

  • Staged rollouts: All Tauri updates now roll out to 5% of users first, with 1-hour monitoring before full deployment.
  • Custom validation for Tauri updates: We added a pre-deploy check that compares Tauri release notes against our app’s IPC usage, flagging any validation or serialization changes for manual review.
  • Improved error handling: We updated our Rust command handlers to catch panics in IPC threads and propagate errors to the frontend, with fallback logging to a local crash report directory.
  • CDN cache tuning: Build artifacts are now cached for 10 minutes, with instant purge capabilities via our CD pipeline.
  • Automated canary testing: We added a pre-production test that spins up 10 virtual machines with the new Tauri build, validates app launch, and runs core functionality checks before deployment.

While the incident caused significant disruption to our users, it highlighted critical gaps in our desktop release process. We’ve already seen a 90% reduction in release-related incidents in the 2 weeks since implementing these changes, and we’re working with the Tauri core team to improve breaking change documentation for future patch releases.
