A few months back I wanted to know what the moon looked like on the night I was born.
I thought it would take 30 seconds. I opened Google, clicked a few links. Some looked like they were built in 2009, some made you sign up, one wanted me to download an app just to see a date. I spent 10 minutes and still wasn't confident the answer was right.
So I built moonagetoday.org.
It shows you the current moon phase, illumination percentage, moon age, zodiac sign, constellation, and distance, updated in real time. You can also pick any date (past or future) and see what the moon looked like that day.
I added a few other things too:
The data is based on Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms and cross-referenced with NASA JPL Horizons data, so it's actually accurate and not just an approximation.
The website is free to use. No signups or downloads.
