MGM+’s psychological thriller American Hostage is going international.

Ahead of the LA Screenings later this month, distributor Sony Pictures Television (SPT) revealed the Jon Hamm-starring drama series from Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers will roll out on MGM+’s international footprint, including in the UK, Germany, Spain (second window), Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Latin America.

At the same time, deals have been struck with HBO Max (France, Central and Eastern Europe, Poland), Movistar Plus+ (Spain), Telia Estonia (Estonia), Telia Play (Lithuania), Tet+ (Latvia), Stan (Australia), Sky New Zealand and beIN across the Middle East, North Africa, and Türkiye.

While it’s not hugely surprising that MGM+ is choosing to roll this one out to other territories, American Hostage is a big play for the Godfather of Harlem streamer. Based on the acclaimed first season of the scripted podcast of the same name, it tells the harrowing true story of Fred Heckman, a beloved Indianapolis radio reporter who is thrust into the middle of a life-or-death crisis when hostage-taker Tony Kiritsis demands to be interviewed on his popular radio news program.

The series stars Hamm (Your Friends & Neighbors, Fargo, Mad Men) as Heckman, alongside Emmy Award nominee Giovanni Ribisi (Avatar, On the Verge, Sneaky Pete) as Kiritsis. The cast includes Kristoffer Polaha (Jurassic World: Dominion, Life Unexpected, Mad Men) as Dick Hall, Emmy Award nominee Mireille Enos (For All Mankind, Hanna, The Killing) as Barbara Heckman, and Emmy Award nominee William Jackson Harper (Love Life, The Underground Railroad, The Good Place) as Ben Hairston.

American Hostage is produced by SPT. Executive producers include Ryan, Hamm, Myers, Connie Tavel (Your Friends & Neighbors, Grimsburg), Marney Hochman (S.W.A.T., The Night Agent, Timeless), Sharon Hoffman (House of Cards), Academy Award winner Shawn Christensen (American Hostage Podcast Series, Curfew) and Gabriel Mason (American Hostage Podcast Series, Abduction).

SPT will showcase American Hostage as part of its upcoming L.A. Screenings presentation on Sunday May 17.
