A Limerick pupil has designed artist the branding for Ireland’s first Health Equity Region, a project which aims to tackle child poverty in Limerick.

This spring, an art competition was launched in primary schools across the city and county, calling on young creatives to design the first draft of a logo that promotes a fair and healthy Limerick.

The aim of the project was to start a conversation, at school level, about what was needed to make their communities healthier and safer. The objective was to co-produce a logo, reflecting the Health Equity Region’s vision to design programmes and initiatives that benefit children and their families.

One of over 150 participants, Abdul Rahman Mustafa, a 4th class pupil, from CBS Primary School in Limerick City won the competition.

Co-sponsored by the HSE Mid West and Limerick mayor John Moran, the Limerick Health Equity Region Oversight Group was founded in May 2025 to tackle health inequalities that spring from poverty and disadvantage.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, said: “When we are making decisions for the future of communities in Limerick, we want to make those decisions with them rather than for them.

"That is why it is so important that the Limerick Health Equity Region has involved children from across our city in creating its identity with this competition. I was so happy to meet the pupils at CBS Sexton St and really impressed with their enthusiasm. These children will help shape Limerick’s future. I’m proud that their voices are already shaping the conversations and decisions that affect them.”

The art competition was led by Public Health HSE Mid West, OSCAILT, TUS-Limerick School of Art and Design, and Education and Training Board’s Local Creative Youth Partnership, with support of the Mayor of Limerick’s Office.
