Being High on AI - Tim Rodenbröker

Hey friends,

I hope you are doing good! Some time ago, my uncle told me: “Tim, many years ago I used cocaine, once”. “How was it?” I asked. “It was that good that I will never do it again!”.

This story keeps on coming to my mind when I am experimenting with AI. Some time ago I've discovered Cursor, an code editor with a powerful built-in coding agent, fed by billions of lines of code harvested from Githubs public (and private?) repositories. I actually only wanted to write a simple application to display text on an image. But the process and a flood of dopamine tempted me to create a complex web app that looked like an early prototype of Figma. During these hours of "tripping" I've realized that the tool took over the control over the process: An LLM determined what I am building.

What the heck was going on here? I was high on AI.

Shortly after I've decided to make another experiment: It took me 30 minutes to craft out an elegant, simple version of the app with 50 lines of Processing code. The other vibe-coded app went straight to the trash.

One quote comes to my mind. It's 2000 years old:

Millipedes have countless feet and yet they are the slowest of all crawling creatures. (Dion Chrysostomos)

I hope you enjoy this newsletter. And I wish you a beautiful spring!

Many thanks to Kiana (@blaofilm) for the photo!

'Learning Creative Coding' by Stig Møller Hansen

My friend and long time peer Stig has spent decades of studying and writing about how his students learn to code and what works best. Now he has distilled his accumulated knowledge into an amazing book and I can't recommend it more! The best part: It's free!

Being High on AI

My uncle once told me: 'Tim, once I tried Cocaine'. 'How was it?' I asked. 'It was that good that I'd never use it again'. Curious what this has to do with AI?

Websites as Plants that Grow and Thrive

What is a Website actually? There is this beautiful essay by the American artist and technologist Laurel Schwulst that I deeply resonate with – not just as a 'technologist', but also as a passionate writer. For the website of our brand new 'Master for Societal Design' at Elisava Barcelona, I wrote a short response to Laurel's text.

AI, again

Martin and I took some time to reflect on the last few years within this thunderstorm of AI Slop. Martin: “I hate reading text written or co-written by AI. There is no overarching sense-making; it feels fragmented, redundant, and, for lack of a better word, soulless. If I don’t feel words are contextualised by human complexity, I don’t want to give them my valuable time. I don’t read it.”

New position at Elisava's 'Master for Societal Design'

I am very much looking forward to start my work at the 'Master for Societal Design' (online), hosted by Elisava. There we explore and think about how the World’s wicked problems are affecting the field of design and how designers can play a positive role in addressing them. We have an amazing line-up and the applications are open now.
