it's a good quip but the case is not really comparable, considering that to have images in your usenet archives you'd have to host and archive a subset of, or the whole alt.binaries hierarchy (deliberately), whereas people just attach media files to mastodon posts. (fwiw, i'm not pruning images, and since the time we started hosting our mastodon server in 2022 we reached ~1T of them; as i'm keeping them on a s3-equivalent storage fronted by the mastodon server, the monthly cost of that is less than 5 euro.)
