Billy Donovan is linked to multiple teams, including the New Orleans Pelicans, after stepping down as head coach of the Chicago Bulls.

The Chicago Bulls coaching search is beginning to take shape, and one name is already emerging as a strong early candidate.

According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, Micah Nori — the lead assistant for the Minnesota Timberwolves — is viewed around the league as a serious option if Chicago hires Minnesota executive Matt Lloyd to lead its front office.

Nori, a 52-year-old veteran assistant, has been gaining traction in recent hiring cycles and is widely considered close to landing his first NBA head coaching job.

Nori has built a strong reputation during his time under Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch, serving as his top assistant since 2021.

During that span, Minnesota has developed into a contender in the Western Conference, reaching the conference finals in consecutive seasons and currently holding a 3-2 series lead over the Denver Nuggets in the first round — despite losing key backcourt starters Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo to injuries.

Nori’s influence within the organization extends beyond typical assistant duties. He has described his role as similar to a “bench coach in baseball,” acting as Finch’s right-hand man and primary in-game strategist.

He helps design game plans, oversees defensive scouting, and provides critical input during crunch-time decisions.

Extensive Coaching Experience Across NBA

Before joining Minnesota, Nori built a diverse résumé across multiple NBA organizations.

He previously served as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, Denver Nuggets, and Detroit Pistons, working under respected coaches including Michael Malone and Dwane Casey.

During his time in Denver, Nori also developed a close relationship with Nikola Jokic before the superstar center’s rise to MVP and championship status.

His ability to connect with players while managing complex game strategies has made him a valued figure within coaching circles.

Bulls Enter New Era After Billy Donovan Decision

Chicago’s coaching vacancy opened after Billy Donovan stepped down following six seasons with the franchise.

Donovan, a Hall of Fame coach, cited the organization’s transition as the primary reason for his decision.

“After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization, I have decided to step away,” Donovan said in a statement.

The Bulls had expressed interest in retaining Donovan, but ultimately agreed to allow a new head of basketball operations to shape the team’s direction.

That front office overhaul is already underway, with Chicago interviewing several candidates for its top executive role.

Front Office Hire Could Shape Coaching Decision

The Bulls’ coaching search is expected to be closely tied to their front office decision.

If Minnesota general manager Matt Lloyd emerges as the hire, league sources believe Nori could quickly become a leading candidate for the head coaching job.

Nori has previously interviewed for multiple openings, including the New York Knicks job last year, which ultimately went to Mike Brown.

With Chicago entering a full organizational reset — including recent front office dismissals and a push for new leadership — the next head coach will likely play a key role in defining the franchise’s identity moving forward.

For now, Nori remains one of the most intriguing names to watch as the Bulls begin a critical offseason that could reshape the team’s future.
