James Pearce Jr. become a rookie record setter for the Falcons in Week 15.

One of the biggest storylines surrounding the Atlanta Falcons this offseason has been the legal issues with star edge rusher James Pearce Jr. and Rickea Jackson. There appears to be a report surfacing that indicates Pearce Jr. could get all his legal charges dropped.

However, this does not mean that the NFL can’t hand James Pearce a punishment, which feels more likely, but this is a big development, given what Pearce Jr. was caught on camera doing.

Reports Surface that James Pearce Jr. Could Get Charges Dropped

Per Andy Slater, James Pearce Jr. could get all his charges dropped if he completes a course. Slater wrote (on Thursday, April 23) via X.com:

SLATER SCOOP: “Falcons’ James Pearce Jr. will have all of his charges dismissed if he completes a program offered to him by the state of Florida, I’ve learned. While details are still being worked out, Pearce Jr. would have to attend therapy sessions and stay out of trouble over a six-month period. His attorney, Yale Sanford, tells me the victim, Rickea Jackson, and the police officers in this case spoke to the state attorney’s office and agreed to this as well.”

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport quote-tweeted Slater’s message with:

“Essentially, James Pearce’s case will be put on hold while he completes the pre-trial intervention. If conditions are met, charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, fleeing and eluding police and resisting an officer with violence to his or her person will be dropped.”

James Pearce Jr. had a phenomenal rookie season for the Atlanta Falcons and was one of two edge rushers drafted in 2025 (Jalon Walker). However, Pearce Jr. proved to be a one-man wrecking crew on the gridiron at times.

Does This Report Change Falcons Draft Strategy?

If true, and James Pearce Jr. passes the program, this could be a huge development for the Atlanta Falcons.

However, the NFL Draft is today, and while the Falcons don’t have a pick until No. 48, this could potentially change their draft strategy.

Again, the NFL will have its own right to hand James Pearce a suspension, but it could help in minimizing the punishment if the dominant pass rusher takes this course and proves he’s changed. In 17 games last season (three starts), Pearce Jr. recorded 10.5 sacks, recovered a fumble, and posted 26 tackles.

He finished third in the Defensive Rookie of the Year rankings.
