The Boston Red Sox fired Alex Cora last week. A former MLB pitcher shared a blunt take on the situation and what could have ultimately led to it.

The Boston Red Sox have certainly had better weeks. On Saturday, they chose to clean house and dismiss manager Alex Cora, as well as four other coaches. The team is off to a 12-17 start this season and currently sits in last place in the American League East, seven games back of the first place New York Yankees.

The Red Sox finally decided that it was time for a change and ultimately chose to go in a different direction. The players certainly were not happy with the moves made by the front office and how the situation was handled, but it’s always possible that there was more to the story than what meets the eye.

Former MLB pitcher Lance Lynn spoke on the podcast “Cardinal Territory” and shared his perspective on what could have ultimately taken place.

“He is loved by his players and always has been, so I’m not surprised that players and all that have his back,” Lynn said.

“I don’t know what was going on between him and the front office. “Is it ‘hey, let’s cut bait below to save our own (expletive) up top?’ You never know in this game and that’s always the worst thing about it.

“I don’t think he lost the locker room. He probably wanted certain people re-signed, and that didn’t happen and then they kind of put the team together the way they did, and I would tell you this right now just because I know the relationship. If he had any choice, (Alex) Bregman would have been back no matter what.”

Former MLB Pitcher Hints at Disconnect Between Cora, Red Sox

While Lynn is not privy to what went on behind the scenes, he correctly pointed out that there always could have been a disconnect between Cora and the front office. Perhaps Cora wasn’t pleased with the fact that Bregman is now gone.

“Maybe it’s just one of those things where he looked at the front office and said ‘I told you so’ and they said ‘Hey, see you later,'” Lynn continued.

Often times, managers and front offices have philosophical differences, and sometimes, those cannot be resolved, which ultimately leads to the manager paying the price and being let go as a result.

Cora is well respected around the game, and there were no reports of him losing the clubhouse in Boston, so what Lynn is saying is certainly very possible, that there could have been a disconnect between the front office and Cora.

Red Sox, Alex Cora Situation Still Unclear

Ultimately, it is not clear what led to the split between Cora and the Red Sox, but there may have been some underlying issues that fans simply are not privy to. Perhaps at another time, things will be a little clearer, but for now, the fanbase is confused.

It will be interesting to see how the Red Sox respond as a team to the organization cleaning house. They have won three consecutive games and are only two games back in the wild card race.
