Chicago Cubs Could Sacrifice Veteran During Stunning Run

The Chicago Cubs are forcing the rest of baseball to take them seriously, and that may create a difficult decision involving veteran outfielder Michael Conforto before the trade deadline arrives.

Because once a team stops looking like a surprise story and starts looking like a legitimate World Series threat, roster sentiment disappears quickly. Front offices stop asking who deserves to stay. They start asking which move gives them the best chance to survive October.

That is why Bleacher Report’s prediction about Conforto matters more now than it would have a month ago.

The Cubs are not trying to stay competitive anymore. They are trying to protect a season that suddenly feels bigger than expected.

Chicago entered Wednesday with seven straight wins, a 17-3 record over its last 20 games, and a growing belief inside the clubhouse that no deficit feels too large. The confidence has become visible. Jameson Taillon admitted after Tuesday’s extra-inning win over Cincinnati that the Cubs now expect to win almost every night.

That kind of momentum changes deadline strategy.

Contenders become aggressive when a season begins to feel real, and the Cubs already have one obvious area that still looks vulnerable.

Cubs Still Have a Rotation Problem

Chicago’s rotation has survived adversity better than expected, but the warning signs remain difficult to ignore.

Justin Steele’s recovery timeline continues to stretch longer than anticipated. Cade Horton is already out for the season. The current group has stabilized things behind Taillon, Matthew Boyd, and Colin Rea, yet few teams survive an entire postseason race without needing additional arms.

That reality puts pressure on the front office.

The Cubs have enough offensive depth to explore trades without completely weakening the roster. That is where Conforto becomes interesting.

Bleacher Report identified the former All-Star as Chicago’s most likely trade candidate because his profile still carries value around the league. Even after a disappointing 2025 season with the Dodgers, Conforto remains a productive left-handed bat against right-handed pitching.

His recent production only strengthens that argument.

Conforto has slashed .323/.436/.548 in limited action this season, including a dramatic walk-off homer Monday against the Reds. That moment reminded teams exactly what he can still provide in the right matchup role.

Ironically, it may have also raised his trade value.

Michael Conforto May Be a Luxury the Cubs Can Move

The Cubs suddenly have too many capable bats competing for playing time.

Moisés Ballesteros continues forcing his way into a bigger offensive role. Craig Counsell has praised the lineup’s depth repeatedly during this winning streak, especially after Chicago secured back-to-back walk-off victories with contributions coming from different parts of the roster.

Five different Cubs players have now delivered walk-off hits this season.

That statistic says a lot about how balanced the roster has become.

Contenders often trade from areas of strength to fix areas of weakness. Chicago’s lineup flexibility gives the organization room to consider moving Conforto if it helps secure controllable pitching depth for the second half.

His contract also makes the situation easier to navigate financially.

Teams looking for left-handed power, bench depth, or a platoon outfielder could view Conforto as one of the cleaner deadline fits available if the Cubs make him accessible.

The timing of this discussion matters because Chicago no longer looks like a team simply enjoying a hot stretch. The Cubs are beginning to resemble a club preparing for a serious postseason push.

That changes everything.

Front offices rarely stay passive when they believe a championship opportunity has opened unexpectedly. If Chicago keeps winning at this pace, difficult roster decisions will follow.

Conforto may end up becoming one of the first real tests of how aggressive the Cubs are willing to be.
