The Baltimore Orioles cut former New York Yankees reliever Lou Trivino.

The Baltimore Orioles have designated former New York Yankees reliever Lou Trivino for assignment, per a team announcement. Right-hander Jose Espada has been recalled to take Trivino’s spot on the roster.

Baltimore added Trivino on a major league deal earlier this month. He spent less than a week in the organization. Trivino opened the year with the Philadelphia Phillies. He was released from the team’s Triple-A squad at the beginning of May.

With the Orioles unlikely to work out a trade, Trivino is probably heading for waivers. There’s a strong chance he goes unclaimed, considering the lack of big-league interest heading into the year. Trivino has plenty of service time, plus a previous outright in his career. He’ll be able to reject a minor league assignment and head to free agency.

Trivino faced the Yankees in his first outing with Baltimore. He was obliterated for six earned runs. The righty recorded just two outs. Trivino gave up a hit to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and walked Austin Wells, but was one out away from getting out of the jam, with light-hitting Jose Caballero coming up. He walked Caballero, then walked Trent Grisham to push across a run. Trivino allowed consecutive hits to Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Jasson Dominguez. He was relieved by position player Weston Wilson.

The second outing for Trivino went much better. He fired 2.1 scoreless frames against the Athletics. The veteran picked up his first three strikeouts of the season. He managed to esacpe the outing without permitting a walk.

Trivino Likely Heading To Free Agency, Could Latch On With Another Team

The well-traveled Trivino might’ve earned himself another MLB gig with the outing against the A’s. Baltimore needed to swap him out for a fresh arm after he tossed 31 pitches, but he performed well. The Orioles were Trivino’s sixth team in seven MLB seasons. He’s also pitched for the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants, and Athletics, plus the aforementioned Phillies and Yankees.

Would the Yankees Consider a Trivino Reunion?

Trivino was traded from the A’s to the Yankees in August 2022. He came over with right-hander Frankie Montas. New York sent back lefties Ken Waldichuk and JP Sears, righty Luis Medina, and second baseman Cooper Bowman. Trivino delivered 3.2 scoreless innings in the playoffs that season. He’s several years removed from that performance, but the Yankees could consider re-adding him with Camilo Doval struggling.
