Director Lucia Alenar Iglesias Explores Family Trauma in ...

Zoe Stein plays a holidaying teenager coming of age during a sun-drenched Majorca summer, only to suddenly find herself caring for her grief-stricken family after her beloved grandmother dies in the trailer for Spanish filmmaker Lucia Alenar Iglesias’ debut feature, Forastera, set for a theatrical release on May 29.

Stein’s character, Cata, at one point in the trailer is seen putting on a vintage dress that belonged to Catalina, her late grandmother played by (Marta Angelat), and unexpectedly taking on the caretaker role for her heartbroken grandfather in the movie meditation on memory, grief and the ghosts of our pasts.

“Enough! Catalina is no longer here! It’s over!” her grandfather Tomeu, played by Spanish acting legend Homar Iglesias, cries out as Cata sees her grandparent’s home gradually overtaken by ants, as her grandmother eerily prophesized just before her untimely death.

Grasshopper Film will release Forastera on May 29 for a weeklong run at Film Forum in New York City, with other U.S. dates to follow for the Spanish film. “I couldn’t ask for a better partner in Grasshopper for the theatrical release of Forastera. The first few drafts of Forastera were written in New York, so to be opening at Film Forum in May is a real full-circle moment. I’m very excited to have the opportunity to share this intimate film with a wider audience,” filmmaker Alenar Iglesias said in a statement.

Forastera won the FIPRESCI Prize after its world premiere in Toronto. The indie drama also stars Nuria Prims,  Martina García and Nonni Ardal.

The Spanish-Swedish-Italian co-production is produced by Ariadna Dot, Marta Cruañas, Tono Folguera, Bàrbara Ferrer, Cesc Mulet, Olivier Guerpillon, Marta Reguera and Giovanni Pompili.
