Second week at the new job and I’m settling in to the hours and the work. My team is dead talented and very different to me in a lot of ways. I think that’ll be a positive. We’ll see.

I cycled both ways on Tuesday and Wednesday - I have a good route that avoids all the traffic. Along the busway to the station, along the river from Elizabeth Way to the new crossing by Cambridge North, and then eight minutes to the science park. Cycling past students rowing on the river at 7am makes me feel like I’m in the establishing shot of a film.

By Thursday my knees were hurting and I decided to try taking a Voi bike instead. The smaller wheels and the potholes were hard on my wrists, and they’re not cheap - in total, each way is £9. More than the train! Maybe an e-bike purchase is on the horizon.

A video chat with an old friend this week revealed a mutual love of Marathon - the game that made Bungie . I read that Bungie are planning on doing more in the Marathon universe. I would love to play a faithful remake of Durandal. I wonder how it would stand up.

I visited the allotment this week and freed my leeks from some weeds. I have to go back and harvest some lettuce tomorrow, and do a lot more weeding. My potato plants have grown huge, and there’s an enormous odd rubbery red and green plant growing under the beans that could be a triffid, a weed, or something else entirely.

Grab-bag

  • Did a bit of optimisation and UI work on the anagram solver in my Guardian crossword app, and wrote it up .
  • It wouldn’t be a blog post of mine if I didn’t mention Elm. I’m keen to try out Acadia - Evan’s new type-safe, functional database library that integrates with it.
  • I wonder how much money the billionaires will spend trying to defeat Prop 40 in California?
  • I enjoyed this post trying to find an honest assessment of pixel art and CRTs.
