April GNU Spotlight with Amin Bandali featuring nineteen new GNU releases: Parallel, Time, and more! — Free Software Foundation — Working together for free software
by Free Software Foundation Contributions · 2026-05-04 · via Planet GNU

Nineteen new GNU releases in the last month (as of April 30, 2026):

  • coreutils-9.11: GNU Coreutils includes all of the basic command-line tools that are expected in a POSIX system. These provide the basic file, shell and text manipulation functions of the GNU system. Most of these tools offer extended functionality beyond that which is outlined in the POSIX standard.
  • gcc-16.1.0: GCC is the GNU Compiler Collection. It provides compiler front-ends for several languages, including C, C++, Objective-C, Fortran, Java, Ada, and Go. It also includes runtime support libraries for these languages.
  • gnuhealth-his-5.0.7: GNU Health is a free medical software system, including support for electronic medical records (EMR), a health information system (HIS) installed and managed using GNU Health Control, and hospital management information system (HMIS) with an accompanying native GTK client. It supports both Spanish and English interfaces. It has been adopted by the United Nations University for implementation and training, as well as by several hospitals and health ministries around the world. In addition to GNU Health HIS server 5.0.7, other components of GNU Health including GNU Health GTK client 5.0.2, GNU Health control center 5.0.3, and Thalamus 0.9.18 were also released in April.
  • gnupg-2.5.19: The GNU Privacy Guard is a complete implementation of the OpenPGP standard. It is used to encrypt and sign data and communication. It features powerful key management and the ability to access public key servers. It includes several libraries: libassuan (IPC between GnuPG components), libgpg-error (centralized GnuPG error values), and libskba (working with X.509 certificates and CMS data).
  • gnutls-3.8.13: GnuTLS is a secure communications library implementing the SSL, TLS, and DTLS protocols. It is provided in the form of a C library to support the protocols, as well as to parse and write X.509, PKCS 12, OpenPGP, and other required structures.
  • inetutils-2.8: Inetutils is a collection of common network programs, such as an ftp client and server, a telnet client and server, and an rsh client and server.
  • libgcrypt-1.12.2: Libgcrypt is a general-purpose cryptographic library. It provides the standard cryptographic building blocks such as symmetric ciphers, hash algorithms, public key algorithms, large integer functions and random number generation.
  • libmicrohttpd-1.0.5: GNU libmicrohttpd is a small, embeddable HTTP server implemented as a C library. It makes it easy to run an HTTP server as part of another application. The library is fully HTTP 1.1 compliant. It can listen on multiple ports, supports four different threading models, and supports IPv6. It also features security features such as basic and digest authentication and support for SSL3 and TLS.
  • lilypond-2.26.0: GNU LilyPond is a music typesetter, which produces high-quality sheet music. Music is input in a text file containing control sequences which are interpreted by LilyPond to produce the final document. It is extendable with Guile.
  • linux-libre-7.0-gnu: GNU Linux-Libre is a free (as in freedom) variant of the kernel Linux. It has been modified to remove all non-free binary blobs.
  • mpc-1.4.1: GNU MPC is a C library for performing arithmetic on complex numbers. It supports arbitrarily high precision and it correctly rounds the results.
  • nano-9.0: GNU nano is a small and simple text editor for use in a terminal. Besides basic editing, it supports: undo/redo, syntax highlighting, spell checking, justifying, auto-indentation, bracket matching, interactive search-and-replace (with regular expressions), and the editing of multiple files.
  • parallel-20260422: GNU Parallel is a tool for executing shell jobs in parallel using one or more computers. Jobs can consist of single commands or of scripts and they are executed on lists of files, hosts, users or other items.
  • parted-3.7: GNU Parted is a package for creating and manipulating disk partition tables. It includes a library and command-line utility.
  • r-4.6.0: R is a language and environment for statistical computing and graphics. It provides a variety of statistical techniques, such as linear and nonlinear modeling, classical statistical tests, time-series analysis, classification and clustering. It also provides robust support for producing publication-quality data plots. A large amount of 3rd-party packages are available, greatly increasing its breadth and scope.
  • sed-4.10: Sed is a non-interactive, text stream editor. It receives a text input from a file or from standard input and it then applies a series of text editing commands to the stream and prints its output to standard output. It is often used for substituting text patterns in a stream. The GNU implementation offers several extensions over the standard utility.
  • time-1.10: Time is a command that displays information about the resources that a program uses. The display output of the program can be customized or saved to a file.
  • units-2.27: GNU Units converts numeric quantities between units of measure. It can handle scale changes through adaptive usage of standard scale prefixes (micro-, kilo-, etc.). It can also handle nonlinear conversions such as Fahrenheit to Celsius. Its interpreter is powerful enough to be used effectively as a scientific calculator.
  • xorriso-1.5.8.pl01: GNU Xorriso is a tool for copying files to and from ISO 9660 Rock Ridge, a.k.a. Compact Disc File System, filesystems and it allows session-wise manipulation of them. It features a formatter and burner for CD, DVD and BD. It can operate on existing ISO images or it can create new ones. xorriso can then be used to copy files directly into or out of ISO files.

For announcements of most new GNU releases, subscribe to the info-gnu mailing list: https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/info-gnu.

To download: nearly all GNU software is available most reliably from https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/. Optionally, you may find faster download speeds at a mirror located geographically closer to you by choosing from the list of mirrors published at https://www.gnu.org/prep/ftp.html, or you may use https://ftpmirror.gnu.org/ to be automatically redirected to a (hopefully) nearby and up-to-date mirror.

A number of GNU packages, as well as the GNU operating system as a whole, are looking for maintainers and other assistance. Please see https://www.gnu.org/server/takeaction.html#unmaint if you'd like to help. The general page on how to help GNU is at https://www.gnu.org/help/help.html.

If you have a working or partly working program that you'd like to offer to the GNU project as a GNU package, see https://www.gnu.org/help/evaluation.html.

As always, please feel free to write to me, bandali@gnu.org, with any GNUish questions or suggestions for future installments.
