I Bought an iPhone 17
2026-02-09 · via Bboysoul's Blog

Introduction

I recently spent 5,399 yuan on an iPhone 17, upgrading from my previous iPhone 13 mini. As an ordinary user, I want to document the actual changes this upgrade has brought, without fancy rhetoric, just genuine usage experiences.

Why I Upgraded

I’ve been using the iPhone 13 mini for several years. Although it’s compact and lovely, it was indeed struggling with battery life and storage. After seeing the iPhone 17 release and having the budget, I decided to upgrade.

Real Usage Experience Comparison

Screen and Grip Feel

The most immediate change is the larger screen. Going from the 13 mini’s small screen to the iPhone 17, while the view has opened up considerably, one-handed operation has become difficult. The comfortable feeling of easily holding it with one hand is gone. For someone like me who’s used to small-screen phones, this requires an adjustment period.

Performance and Smoothness

Smoothness has indeed improved, but not as dramatically as imagined. This might be because my usage scenarios are relatively simple—basic social media, web browsing, watching videos, etc., which didn’t lag on the 13 mini either. Additionally, iOS 26’s optimization is somewhat disappointing; sometimes I still feel minor stutters, hoping subsequent system updates will improve this.

Battery Performance

The battery is indeed better, but not as amazing as I imagined. From leaving home in the morning to returning at night, I basically don’t need to charge midway, which is much better than the 13 mini. However, perhaps I had too high expectations; in actual use, it feels moderate.

Charging and Port

The charging cable has changed to USB-C, which is good news. Although I need to prepare new cables, being able to unify the port with iPad and MacBook means carrying one less cable when going out, which is a plus.

Storage Space

Finally, I can store movies and download Apple Music songs! This is a very practical upgrade for me. Previously, the 13 mini’s storage was tight, and I had to frequently clear photos and apps. Now I can confidently install more apps while also downloading movies in advance to watch on the subway.

Camera

The camera has indeed improved. I can now shoot horizontal videos in vertical orientation, which is very convenient for those who frequently shoot videos. Image quality is also noticeably better than the 13 mini. However, for a straight guy like me, photography is just about documenting life; I don’t pay too much attention to these details—good enough works for me.

Dynamic Island

Dynamic Island is more practical than imagined. I can directly check food delivery information on the Dynamic Island without frequently switching apps—this small detail is quite thoughtful. Viewing music playback progress, call duration, and other information is also more intuitive.

Summary

From the iPhone 13 mini to the iPhone 17, this upgrade is overall worthwhile, but it doesn’t have that “wow, amazing” feeling. The screen is larger, battery is better, storage is sufficient—these are all tangible improvements. But at the same time, I’ve lost the portability of a small-screen phone, which is something that needs to be weighed.

For 5,399 yuan, it’s a reasonable investment for my usage scenarios. If you’re still using a 13 mini or earlier model, you should definitely consider upgrading; but if you’re using a 14 or 15 series, you might not need to rush.

Final Words

Although technology products iterate quickly, I believe a good product should remain in your memory even when it’s no longer usable. For me, that’s the Nokia E66 and Lumia 520. The E66 was nearly just a circuit board by the end, and the Lumia 520—I really don’t know how many times it was dropped. I think phones on the market today have no soul because they’re all too fragile. Although I’ve changed phones, I can never find that feeling of playing with an iPhone for the first time again.
