The Open Source Initiative joins the Open Forum for AI (OFAI) in supporting calls for the U.S. to develop more open models because they promote competition in AI through local control and lower costs. The OFAI is a university-led, collaborative initiative that aims to bend the arc toward human-centered, responsible, transparent, and ethical AI. Led by Carnegie Mellon University, the OFAI includes university representatives from across the country as well as nonprofit voices and individual fellows from industry and government. As the policy lead, we collaborated with other OFAI members to lay out the benefits of Open Source AI and open-weight models in comparison to closed, proprietary ones. 

The statement asserts that the U.S. needs more “focus, investment, and collaboration from the full breadth of the innovation pipeline to accelerate the development of open models. This will require a strategic approach that moves beyond the status quo, bringing together new partners, both technical and non-technical, from across industry, academia, and government.”
