Tony Shalhoub Joins CBS Dramedy 'Einstein' From 'Monk' Cr...
Joe Otterson · 2026-05-29 · via Variety

Tony Shalhoub has joined the upcoming CBS drama “Einstein” in a recurring guest star role, Variety has learned.

The role reunites Shalhoub with Andy Breckman, who developed “Einstein” from a German format and previously created the hit USA Network series “Monk,” in which Shalhoub starred for eight seasons and the followup TV movie “Mr. Monk’s Last Case.” Randy Zisk, an executive producer and director on “Monk,” is also an executive producer on “Einstein.”

Shalhoub joins previously announced “Einstein” cast members Matthew Gray Gubler, Melissa Fumero, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. The official logline for the show states, “Brilliant but directionless, the great grandson of Albert Einstein (Gubler) spends his days as a comfortably tenured professor until his bad boy antics land him in trouble with the law and he is pressed into service helping a local police detective (Fumero) solve her most puzzling cases.”

Shalhoub will play Jack Einstein, father to Gubler’s Lewis Einstein.

This is not the first time Shalhoub has starred in a CBS series. He previously played lead roles in the CBS shows “BrainDead” and “We Are Men.”

Shalhoub won three Emmys and a Golden Globe for his time on “Monk.” In television, he is also known for his work in the critically-acclaimed Amazon series “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” for which he won his fourth Emmy. His other TV roles include “Wings,” while he is known for starring in films like the Pixar franchise “Cars,” “Galaxy Quest,” the “Men in Black” films, and “Barton Fink.”

He is repped by CAA.

“Einstein” was originally ordered to series in 2025 but was subsequently delayed until the 2026-2027 broadcast season. It is now slated to debut at midseason 2027 on CBS. As stated above, Breckman developed the American version and serves as executive producer along with Zisk, Michael Rauch, Tariq Jalil, Rose Hughes, Rodrigo Herrera Ibarguengoytia, and Laura Beetz. Gubler is a producer in addition to starring. CBS Studios will produce.
