Introducing the Community Server Cleanup Report for Augus...

A set of six flathead screwdrivers.

Hey, server moderators and admins! Over the past few months, we have been doing some spelunking through a backlog of long-standing requests, tackling fixes and improvements that help game developers and community builders spin up and run healthy and active servers.

Whether you run a server yourself, are part of a moderation team, or manage a community, you’ve probably felt some of the pain points we’ll be discussing below. The good news: this is just the first wave in a series of updates focused on empowering communities — especially game developer-led ones. Discord has built a whole new team, dedicated to bringing communities more control, more power, and fewer reasons to scream into the void. Now, let’s dig into some of the stuff we’ve updated! (Screaming in excitement IS allowed as we go through these.)

Smoothing Out Server & Channel Management

Channel permission settings.

These are for the admins who’ve been juggling stuff like clunky channel behavior, role settings, or moderator views that just aren’t quite right. With these updates, you’ll spend less time fighting with the app settings and more time actually running and engaging your server.

  • For members who don’t have “Show All Channels” enabled, unread mentions in Voice and Stage channels now cause them to appear in “Suggested Channels.”
  • Added a new context (right-click) menu with a delete option to the Role list in Permission settings.
  • Fixed Mod View for servers without the “Community” feature set enabled — it works for all servers now!
  • Improved Markdown support when editing channel descriptions.
  • The Settings page finally updates correctly when editing roles on Android and iOS.

Communities & Server Onboarding

Splash page for setting up Community Onboarding.

For the community builders who’ve been stuck in weird Onboarding loops or frustrating Server Guide behaviors, these fixes will help make new member experiences smoother, cleaner, and more under your control.

  • When the Community feature set is disabled, the Server Guide is now also disabled if you had it turned on.
  • The Server Guide now supports accessible screenreaders.
  • We fixed an infinite loop bug that happened when trying to exit Server Onboarding on mobile. You can Onboard any time you like, but you can never leave…

Fine-Tuning Forum Channels

A Forum channel on Discord.

These fixes are for community leaders who rely on Forum channels to collect feedback, manage conversations, or support playtesting groups that have hit bugs of their own. With these changes, Forum channels should feel more stable — for both admins and community members.

  • Forum channels are now available in all server types, without needing to enable the Community feature set.
  • We spruced up the Forum post editing experience in channels on iOS.
  • There was a loophole that let members bypass the Tag requirements for Forum posts if you had one enabled. We fixed that!
  • The behavior of the Shift/Home/End keys when viewing Forums is now consistent with the rest of Discord.
  • Previously, if a user tried to make a new Thread in a Forum that was at capacity and had Slowmode turned on, the user would have Slowmode applied to them even if their post wasn’t able to be created. This is now fixed, so they’ll be able to post somewhere else instead!
  • Closing a Thread in a Forum channel that’s currently in Gallery View behaves as it should.
  • If you previously blocked someone, their Forum posts will be hidden, just like they are in normal channels.
  • Finally, we did a bit of spring cleaning of the sorting and tagging systems in Forum channels.

And guess what: we’re not even done yet! We’ll be popping in on a regular basis to show off the stuff we’ve fixed that benefits both community servers and official servers run by game developers.

If you’re running a community, or developing a game, or are part of a server’s moderation team, know that we want to make your mod life easier — and we’ll be back soon. ✌️
