The son of an ex-bikie kingpin has been found dead in a Melbourne park after he was abducted and murdered by a machete-wielding gang.

Patrick Longordo, 30, the son of former Mongols chapter boss Joseph Longordo, was pounced upon by up to seven armed Sudanese men at 3am on Friday.

The men broke through the front door of his South Morang home as he slept before dragging him into a car, all while his brother James and two children were sleeping.

Soon after, his body was found dumped at a playground near Bruni Drive in Tarneit, 25km west of Melbourne's CBD, at 4.30am.

A dark-coloured Mazda SUV was reportedly seen speeding away from the scene. It was later found torched on a secluded road near Eynesbury just before 6am.

'To be home in your house and have something like this happen is extremely frightening,' Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said.

'It appears at this point in time that the offending is somewhat targeted.

'He [Longordo] was known to police.'

His father Joseph has arrived back in Melbourne after hearing his son had been killed

A friend of the victim's told the Herald Sun: 'He was a good kid and a good bloke. Did they mean to kill him? I'm not too sure. It definitely was not bikie-related though.'

Mr Longordo's father has flown back to Melbourne from Bali, and police are wary of potential retaliation.

'We're always concerned about retaliation. We'll work closely with, in this case, with the family and associates,' Detective Inspector Thomas said.

'I assure the community that we have a large number of Homicide Squad detectives working on this investigation and we will piece it together.'

Mr Longordo's father is a former chapter president of the Mongols, but has not been a member for some time.

Locals were stunned when told of the alleged murder.

'I was here last night and usually I don't feel unsafe in this area. Now, I think I would think twice before going out when it's dark,' one local woman said.

'It was a bit of a shock, to me and my wife, waking up to that in our quiet neighbourhood, it was a bit different and unusual,' neighbour Chris said.

Police are investigating if Mr Longordo was murdered at his home or inside the vehicle before his body was dumped in the park

'It's a quiet area, nothing happens, yeah, it's just a shock to us,' another local said.

Those responsible are still on the run.

A postmortem will determine the cause of death.

Homicide detectives are working to determine if Mr Longordo was murdered at his home or inside the vehicle before his body was dumped.

Detectives will work with the Echo Taskforce, which investigates bikie gangs.

Police are appealing to the public for information as investigations continue.
