Some folk travel the world seeking that rarefied blend of luxury, comfort and relaxation.

Others are lucky to discover that sanctuary right on their doorstep. I count myself one of the latter, for less than a mile from my home (as the gull flies) lies the resplendent Mar Hall hotel resort - ready to warmly welcome guests no matter how far they have travelled.

Despite its proximity to Glasgow, Mar Hall feels like an escape to the countryside. The views of the soaring Kilpatrick hills from the southern shore of the River Clyde are breathtaking, effortlessly blending manicured grounds with the natural surroundings of the tranquil woodland.

The 19th Century baronial mansion in Bishopton has recently undergone a £20million makeover. The creative team has brought a contemporary style and glamour to the grand old dame, making her almost unrecognisable from a few years back.

There’s a vibrant buzz at Mar Hall – a whole new energy and The Gallery was the perfect place to begin our stay. We sat grinning over crystal glasses as fellow guests chewed the fat and played backgammon on nearby tables.

Our table pondered whether former residents, Beyonce or Kylie Minogue, enjoyed an Aperol Spritz or a dram in the same spot. The games are a fun touch in the social and literal heart of the resort.

Another is the complimentary cinema, a great way to switch off or to keep younger children happy for a couple of hours.

Thankfully our kids were grown up and contented across the water as we made our way to The Dining Room. The ornate surroundings were fit for a culinary treat and the staff duly delivered.

The Argyll smoked salmon melted in the mouth. The roast chicken and black pudding went the same way with the delicious addition of a Madeira and mushroom elixir.

My wife recoils in horror at the sounds I make if I’m loving my food just that wee bit too much. This was again one of those times.

Thankfully nobody else seemed to notice as we headed back through to an inviting fire place for a warming nightcap. We were having so much fun we decided that Netflix could wait in our room for another hour.

The Dining Room at Mar Hall

One drink led to two and two led to a pool challenge in the billiard room. Being a gentleman I shouldn’t reveal the result of the contest but we are dealing in facts here … and I will admit that I lost!

The bragging continued to our luxurious room, decorated in the same fashionable themes seen downstairs. The bed was big enough to ignore Mrs Cool Hand Luke’s boastful celebrations as the curtains closed on an amazing night.

The sun arose way down river as we enjoyed an expectedly delicious Scottish breakfast. Over a last coffee we enthusiastically discussed our next return.

Mar Hall has an enchanting charm that keeps drawing us back across the river.

It may only be a mile away from our front door but for us it’s the perfect place to feel at home.

Classic Room rates from £300 per night
