DOD says Iran war cost now roughly $29B
iwp370 · 2026-05-12 · via InsideDefense.com

Acting Pentagon Comptroller Jay Hurst told lawmakers today that the cost of the ongoing U.S. operation in Iran is now about $29 billon, roughly $4 billion more than what he told Congress less than two weeks ago.

Hurst, testifying before the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, said the price tag of the conflict is now "closer to $29 billion" but does not include key costs like damages to U.S. bases in the Middle East.

The increase, he said, is the result of "updated repair and replacement of equipment costs and also just general operational costs to keep people in theater."

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told the committee he could not provide a schedule for when a request for supplemental funding would be submitted to help pay for the conflict.

"When it is relevant and required, we will share it," he said.

Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA), who chairs the subcommittee, told Hegseth it would be "helpful to the get the supplemental sooner rather than later so we can get to work on it."

Meanwhile, Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN), the subcommittee's ranking member, asked Hurst to send detailed war costs to lawmakers before June 11 as the panel needs it to mark up its fiscal year 2027 defense spending bill.

"I know you're going to do your best," she said. "We'll take the homework assignment in pieces."
