MS NOW’s Chris Hayes Takes On The ‘Terrifying Questions’ Around AI With New Podcast

MS NOW host Chris Hayes takes on the opportunity—and the risks—of AI in his new podcast "The AI End Game"

MS NOW

Lots of things keep Chris Hayes up at night.

The MS NOW prime time host channeled some of those insomnia-triggering subjects into a hit podcast, “Why Is This Happening?,” which won a Webby Award for best interview/talk show podcast in 2025. Now he’s launching a new podcast, “The AI End Game,” to answer another unsettling question: is AI “unstoppable”?

AI is “moving very fast, and suddenly, it is just everywhere: workplace, schools, media,” Hayes says in a trailer for the podcast released Thursday. He says while AI presents new possibilities, it also “raises a lot of pretty terrifying questions.” And those are the questions he hopes to answer.

Hayes say he’ll sit down each week with people who’ve studied AI and its effects, as well as refreshing listeners on exactly what AI is--and isn’t. “What happens if it changes not just how we work,” Hayes asks, “but how we think--or, more essentially, who we are?”

Hayes has lined up an all-star group of guests, including The Atlantic journalist Derek Thompson; professor at Wharton and New York Times bestselling author Ethan Mollick; professor of psychology at UC Berkeley and member of the Berkeley AI Research Group Alison Gopnik; former co-lead of the Ethical Artificial Intelligence Team at Google and co-founder of Black in AI Timnit Gebru; philosopher and cognitive scientist David Chalmers; author, host of the “Better Offline” podcast and writer of the “Where’s Your Ed At” newsletter, Ed Zitron; and The New York Times journalist and author, Michael Pollan.

How far can AI go?

Hayes has explored AI’s potential for good and ill on his show, All In, and in his book The Siren’s Call: How Attention Became the World’s Most Endangered Resource. "One thing I do wonder about is whether AI will get good enough that companies can start to use the experimental method that runs the algorithms to actually make longer form stories,” he told Forbes last year.

“The AI End Game: Power, Profit, and Progress” debuts Tuesday, May 5 on most podcast platforms and as a video series on MS NOW’s YouTube channel (Hayes was the first MS NOW host to produce an original podcast in both audio and video formats).

MS NOW’s expanding footprint beyond cable TV

The new podcast is part of a major push by MS NOW into digital platforms where many people get their information--especially younger people who often don’t watch cable news. The network had more than 140 million audio downloads in 2025, and 3.8 billion views on YouTube.

With “The AI End Game,” MS NOW has produced well over 20 original podcasts, including Rachel Maddow’s hits “Burn Order,” “Ultra,” and “Bag Man.” MS NOW hosts Ali Velshi ("Velshi Banned Book Club"), Nicolle Wallace ("The Best People") and Jen Psaki ("The Blueprint") have all launched podcasts. Recent launches include Clock It from Symone Sanders Townsend and Eugene Daniels.

The network has also built an expansive presence on YouTube, becoming the one of the most-viewed linear news networks on the platform, with more views than ABC News, CBS News and NBC News combined. MS NOW has been experimenting with original shows like It’s Happening with Velshi & Ruhle and Jen Psaki’s Psaki Bombs.

The network’s digital strategy focuses on building relationships with listeners and viewers, rather than simply repurposing TV content on digital platforms. “Come in, just join us and tell us what you want,” Ali Velshi told me last year, noting the opportunities to meet news consumers where they are.

“Send us your questions,” he said. "Take advantage of the fact that on YouTube and TikTok and people can send us questions. “I think if the viewer gets the message that they’re communicating with hosts on…MS NOW, and that will work its way through to the way we cover things, I think that makes that makes us better for our viewers over the longer term.”

MS NOW has also brought podcasts onto TV, launching Crooked on MS NOW, a weekly show featuring the best moments from Crooked Media, the studio behind top-rated political podcasts like “Pod Save America.”
