Andrea Kimi Antonelli powered his Mercedes to a dramatic victory in Montreal, making history as the first F1 driver to win his first four grand prix races consecutively.

Heading into the weekend, there were plenty of predictions that Antonelli’s teammate George Russell would make a comeback and chip away at the 20-point gap between them in the world championship. As Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve suits the Briton well and with more experience under his belt, it seemed like Russell would give Antonelli a run for his money.

Russell started the weekend in a dominant fashion, having secured victory from pole in Saturday’s sprint before bagging another pole position for Sunday’s main race, looking set to cap off a perfect weekend with a full points haul.

But Antonelli wasn’t ready to make things easy for his teammate. The two drivers had some intense battles throughout the race, swapping the lead multiple times in the early laps. Everything changed however on lap 30 when Russell had to retire from the lead due to a power unit failure, leaving him visibly furious as he watched a potential comeback slip away.

From there, Antonelli took the lead and never looked back, claiming a historic fourth consecutive victory with a margin of 10.7 seconds and stretching his lead to 43 points in the world championship.

Despite the victory, Antonelli admitted that it wasn’t quite how he wanted to win, saying that it “would have been cool” to see how the race would play out between himself and Russell after their thrilling wheel-to-wheel duel.

“Not really the way I wanted to win if I have to be honest because it was a tough fight with George,” said Antonelli.

“It was very intense but I think it would have been cool to see how it would have ended up because we were going at each other.”

It was as well a brilliant outing for Lewis Hamilton as he secured his best grand prix finish yet in Ferrari red. The seven-time world champion passed Max Verstappen’s Red Bull in the closing laps to grab second place and secure his 204th career podium finish.

“Oh man, it’s the happiest day of my days at Ferrari so far,” Hamilton said after the race. “It feels great to be able to put the Ferrari on the podium, and to get my first second place with the team as well in the main race, and this is my second podium as well.”

Verstappen also celebrated his highest race finish so far this year, claiming his and the team’s first podium of the season after a disappointing start to their campaign.

Charles Leclerc and Isack Hadjar netted fourth and fifth in the sister Ferrari and Red Bull cars, while Franco Colapinto claimed sixth in his Alpine, finishing ahead of Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Pierre Gasly in the other Alpine.

Carlos Sainz scored points for Williams in ninth, with Haas driver Oliver Bearman taking the final point in tenth.

Elsewhere it was a disastrous outing for McLaren as they failed to replicate last round’s strong performance and positive results of second and third in Miami.

Oscar Piastri found himself in a lowly P11 at the end of the race following a strategy blunder while defending champion Lando Norris had to retire on lap 38 for what he said was a gearbox issue.

With the Montreal weekend now wrapped up, Antonelli maintains a grip on the world championship, leading Russell by 43 points.

Leclerc holds third place with 75 points, while Hamilton’s second-place finish moved him up to fourth ahead of Norris who now sits in fifth with Piastri behind.

Verstappen’s third-place finish has him just five points behind Piastri in seventh, with Gasly and Bearman completing the top 10 in the drivers’ championship.

After five rounds into the season, Aston Martin and Cadillac are the only teams to have not scored any points yet, currently occupying 10th and 11th positions in the constructors’ championship.
