Father’s Day is just around the corner; if you haven’t landed the perfect gift or are just looking to add something on to your gift, a book is never a bad idea. Having worked in the menswear space for a while now, year after year, I know better than most that dads can be difficult to shop for and while I would usually suggest gifting something that helps him pursue a hobby or that celebrates his inner child, there are few gifts more universal than a book. There is a book about everything, and therefore no matter what your dad loves, there’s a book for him. Does your dad watch war documentaries? There’s a book for that. Does your dad look soccer? Also a book for that! Does your dad like cooking? Literally an entire section at Barnes & Noble for this.

I’m also a firm believer in gifting men books because I think you’re doing your part to improve literacy rates in men. Studies show that men read less than women and while women read books by men and women equally, when men do read they tend to read books written by other men. Just a few weeks ago, the Pamela Paul and Jeffrey A. Trachtenberg writing for the Wall Street Journal observed: “Dad Books Are A Dying Breed.”

“Nonfiction book sales have been in decline for the past four years, and are now the most challenged segment of the print book market,” they write. “But in recent years, print sales in such categories as biography, current affairs and business and economics—what publishers refer to as “serious nonfiction” and which tend to resonate especially with men—have fallen considerably.”

So whether you’re interested in chipping away at the reading gender gap, or gifting to a bibliophile dad here are some “dad books” to gift this Father’s Day.

‘Skyring Water’ By Louis L’Amour and Beau L’Amour: For the “fall asleep in front of the history channel” dads, I recommend a copy of this Cold War epic; written by a father-son duo, this suspenseful thriller about a world on the brink of nuclear war will keep your dad turning pages well into the night.

‘Thrilling Tales of Modern Men’ By Danny McBride: Known for shows like Eastbound & Down and the Righteous Gemstones, McBride brings his comedic genius to this debut short story collection that tells the stories of men coping with life’s tragedies, both big and small.

‘Bird Men’ By A. J. Baime: If your dad is like my dad, he can identify any plane overhead from the ground which is why I pre-ordered Bird Men for my dad. This sprawling work of non-fiction is a fascinating deep dive into American airpower during World War II; as a placeholder until the book arrives, I recommend gifting your dad a model airplane.

‘The Language of Trees: How Trees Make Our World, Change Our Minds, and Rewild Our Lives’ By Katie Holten: For nature loving dads, I recommend ordering this beautiful work of non-fiction that charts the interconnected relationship between trees and humanity. Like Bird Men, The Language of Trees releases later this year; in the meantime, I recommend gifting this Bonsai Lego as a sneak peek.

‘Detour’ By Jeff Rake and Rob Hart: Lauded as “If The Martian and The Twilight Zone had a baby,” this intergalactic thriller is the perfect gift for the sci-fi loving dad in your life. Bonus points if you pair it with an actual meteor.

‘Jigsaw’ By Jonathan Kellerman: If your dad is always watching the latest crime drama, may I recommend this thriller which follows a psychologist-detective crime fighting duo on the heels of a brutal murderer.

‘Jim’ By Shelley Fisher Fishkin: From a renowned Twain scholar, this book explores one of literatures most meaningful characters–who Jim was in Twain’s eyes, who he became for American history, and why it’s so important to understand his legacy, today.
