John Krasinski is back in Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War, but the spinoff movie is earning only half the respect that Rotten Tomatoes’ critics gave to the original streaming series.
Jack Ryan: Ghost War marks Krasinski’s return to the title character after starring in Tom Clancy’s legendary spy, Jack Ryan, for four seasons on Prime Video from 2018 to 2023.

The character, of course, originated on the big screen with Alec Baldwin starring as Ryan in The Hunt for Red October in 1990. Harrison Ford was next to play Ryan in 1992’s Patriot Games and 1994’s Clear and Present Danger, followed by Ben Affleck in 2002’s Clear and Present Danger and Chris Pine in 2014’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
The new Jack Ryan movie was released on Prime Video on Wednesday. Directed by Andrew Berstein (Ozark, The Diplomat), Jack Ryan: Ghost War finds Ryan reluctantly being pulled from civilian life and thrust back into the spy game when an international mission unearths a deadly conspiracy.

As of Wednesday, Jack Ryan: Ghost War has earned a 40% “rotten” critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer based on 15 reviews. RT’s Critics Consensus, Audience Summary and Popcornmeter score based on verified user ratings. By contrast, Jack Ryan’s four seasons earned a combined 80% “fresh” score on RT.
Monica Castillo of AV Club is among the top critics on RT who give Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan: Ghost War a “rotten” score, writing on the site, “In a time of real-life surprise wars and dictator-snatching, what Jack Ryan has to say is deeply uninspired.”

Craig Matthews of The Age (Australia) also gives Jack Ryan: Ghost War a “rotten” score. Matthews writes on RT, “There are references to losing faith in your country even as you fight for it, but for the most part, Ghost War feels like an awkward translation of the series.”
