Andy Robertson has more than just club soccer on his mind at the moment. Indeed, the left back is preparing for Scotland’s first World Cup since 1998 as the national team captain and so he could be forgiven for not turning up to Tottenham Hotspur for his unveiling as the North London side’s latest signing.

After leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, Robertson decided to stay in the Premier League despite reported interest from Serie A. Juventus was believed to be weighing up an offer for the left back who was close to joining Atletico Madrid from Liverpool a year ago.

Of course, Tottenham avoided relegation to the Championship on the final day of last season and so much better is expected of the North London outfit after the summer. Robertson has been signed to be a key part of a new-look team that will now be formed under manager Roberto De Zerbi.

At 32, Robertson is now entering the twilight of his career. He is fading as a physical force and only started 11 Premier League games for Liverpool last season. Many Liverpool fans believed Robertson should have been ahead of Milos Kerkez in the pecking order, but Arne Slot disagreed.

Now, De Zerbi has lured Robertson to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in an attempt to remedy the lack of leadership in his dressing room. The 32-year-old is a natural leader and will bring a certain authority to the Spurs backline which has lacked that sort of presence for a number of years.

“Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team,” said De Zerbi upon the announcement of Robertson’s signing. “He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.”

Spurs need much more than just a new left back to bounce back next season. De Zerbi is surely also looking at central midfielders capable of playing his possession-orientated game. Tottenham could also do with more attacking depth to ward against the injuries that have impacted them so profoundly recently.

For starters, though, Robertson’s signing makes a lot of sense for a club that is at the start of a rebuild. De Zerbi doesn’t just need better players, he needs stronger characters. This is where the Scotland international fits the bill. He could be one of Spurs’ best signings of the summer.
