How Chiefs Coach Andy Reid Will Spend His Summer Break

Three days after his team’s three-day minicamp concluded, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was in Lee’s Summit, Mo., filming a commercial for State Farm.

Then Reid, who grew up in Los Angeles, was headed to his beach house in Southern California, where he can unwind before training camp starts in mid-to-late July.

“If you stay in the city, you’re going to dive in and do stuff — at least I am,” Reid exclusively shared from the State Farm shoot. “I’m better when I get away.”

Of course, Reid, who is known for his work ethic, which can include burning the midnight oil with film review or going to the Chiefs’ facility before sunrise, will not completely unplug.

But he’ll do so in an idyllic setting.

“It’s a lot easier looking at the waves,” he said. “It keeps you in a good environment.”

Instead of his 12 hours or so of a typical workday, Reid said he might spend an hour or two breaking down film or on play design.

“Out of a 24-hour day, that’s not bad,” he said. “It’s not intense or all of that. That’s not what it is.”

Plus, since football prep is a passion of his, it’s an enjoyable activity rather than a daily chore.

Part of his routine will be to stay in communication with his three coordinators: Special teams coordinator Dave Toub, offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

“I don’t bug on those guys too much,” Reid said.

Bieniemy played for Reid on the Philadelphia Eagles in 1999, and Reid has coached with Toub and Spagnuolo for decades.

Reid’s NFL coaching career dates back to his days as an assistant with the Green Bay Packers in 1992, and prior to coaching in Kansas City, he was the Eagles head coach from 1999 to 2012.

Early in that lengthy NFL coaching tenure, he wasn’t always the best at unwinding.

“I didn’t take a lot of vacations,” he said. “That’s not what we did.”

Now the 68-year-old Reid and his wife Tammy, who were college sweethearts at BYU, will have as many as many as 25 family members, including grandchildren, staying with them at their beach house during some point of the summer.

He can further rest at ease, knowing his franchise star — and fellow State Farm spokesman — Patrick Mahomes is tethered to the Chiefs for the foreseeable future, having signed an eight-year, $504.75 million restructured contract extension with Kansas City. The deal goes through 2033.

“I’m glad I can extend and hopefully finish my career here,” Mahomes said. “It means the world to me just because the city that Kansas City is and the people it has. We’ve done a lot of great things here, but I think more than that, it’s just the community that we built.”

Mahomes, who has been to five Super Bowls while having Reid as his head coach, emphasized that he is hungry and looking forward to bouncing back from last year’s 6-11 record.

So is Reid.

“(I’m) excited about the season,” Reid said. “You step away and then recharge it and get ready.”
