Joy Harmon, the actress featured in a famous car wash scene in Paul Newman’s prison drama Cool Hand Luke, has died.

Harmon died on Tuesday while at home in Los Angeles, a family member told TMZ. Although various news outlets are reporting that Harmon was 87, the actress’ profile on IMDb notes that she was born on May 1, 1940, which would have made her 85 years old.

The family member who spoke with TMZ said Harmon was suffering from pneumonia several weeks ago and was hospitalized for one to two weeks before spending several weeks in a rehabilitation facility. Harmon was receiving hospice care at the time of her death, the family member told TMZ.

Born Joy Patricia Harmon in Flushing, N.Y., the actress’ first screen role came in the 1958 music drama Let’s Rock, and she appeared on Groucho Marx’s game show Tell it to Groucho in 1961.

Harmon is perhaps best known, however, for her brief but memorable turn in Cool Hand Luke in 1967.

In the scene, as Lucas “Luke” Jackson, Dragline (George Kennedy), and their fellow prisoners are digging ditches in the countryside when Harmon’s character — who is billed as “The Girl” but is referred to as “Lucille” by Dragline — heavily distracts the crew while washing a car.

During the three-plus minute scene, Harmon did not utter one line of dialogue.

Joy Harmon Appeared In 30 Screen Projects

While Cool Hand Luke stands out as one of Joy Harmon’s career highlights, she appeared in about 30 screen roles throughout her career.

In addition to her feature film work in Let’s Rock and Cool Hand Luke, Harmon appeared on the big screen in the 1965 sci-fi comedy Village of the Giants and the comedy One Way Wahine in the same year.

Harmon also appeared in guest roles in several notable television series, including The Beverly Hillbillies, My Three Sons, Burke’s Law, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Gidget, Batman, Gomer Pyle: USMC, That Girl, The Monkees, The Odd Couple and Love, American Style.

Harmon’s last guest role came in 1973 in the sitcom Thicker than Water.

Following her acting career, Harmon worked at Disney Studios and in 2003, she started her bakery, Aunt Joy’s Cakes, in Burbank, Calif., according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Harmon is survived by her three children, Jamie, Julie and Jason, as well as nine grandchildren.
