Topline

An Iranian drone struck a terminal building at Kuwait International Airport on Wednesday, Kuwait’s government ministries said, killing one person and injuring at least 63 more, as U.S. and Iranian forces again exchanged fire, threatening to upend the tense ceasefire between the two sides.

Key Facts

In an update on social media, Kuwait’s military said it intercepted 13 ballistic missiles and 17 hostile drones, which Ministry of Defense spokesperson Colonel Saud Abdulaziz Al-Atwan called “heinous Iranian aggression.”

Kuwait’s Ministry of Health said of the 63 people injured in the strike, seven who “urgent major surgical procedures,” while the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed one person was killed—India’s foreign ministry later confirmed the victim was an Indian national, and “several” more Indian nationals were injured in the strike.

The strike also damaged “vital installations, including diplomatic missions,” the Kuwaiti government said, but did not specify which ones were targeted, and video footage published by Reuters appears to show fires burning in the airport’s Terminal 1 building.

Bahrain’s military said it intercepted three ballistic missiles and several drones targeting “civilian sites” in the Gulf monarchy, which also hosts a major U.S. naval base.

Iran said the U.S. struck a tanker and a communications tower on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, and that Bahrain and Kuwait had "direct and clear responsibility" for the U.S. strikes.

Key Background

The U.S. and Iranian strikes come as peace negotiations appear to stall between the two sides. On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned Israel’s continued air strikes and ground campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon, saying: “The ceasefire between Iran and the US is unequivocally a ceasefire on all fronts, including in Lebanon.” Araghchi said a violation on any front, including in Lebanon, would violate the entire deal and Iran would hold the U.S. and Israel responsible. Iranian state media reported the country planned to pull out of peace negotiations, which President Donald Trump said he "couldn't care less" about.

Surprising Fact

The strike on Kuwait’s airport comes only two days after it fully reopened following earlier Iranian attacks. One previous drone strike in March damaged a fuel tank, causing a fire and a pillar of smoke did not cause any casualties, Reuters reported.
