Equinix, digital infrastructure company on Wednesday announced the launch of MB3, its fourth International Business Exchange (IBX) data center in Mumbai.
Located in Chandivali, Powai, MB3 is the third Equinix data centre to be set-up in Central Mumbai, forming an interconnected campus linked through dark fiber networks.
With an initial investment of over $95 million, MB3 provides more than 1,370 cabinets of capacity, with the facility designed to scale to more than 5,475 cabinets when fully built out.
Stating that Mumbai and India represent one of the most important markets in terms of strategic priority, Cyrus Adaggra, President Asia Pacific at Equinix said the company has invested $365 million already in India,
“That represents a very significant investment for us in an emerging market and I absolutely expect us to continue to invest here,” he said.
Rather than hyperscalers, the company focuses on demand from segments like BFSI, submarine cable companies, gaming companies, among other broad-based demand sectors.
Across its Mumbai and Chennai campuses, Equinix currently provides a combined capacity of more than 4,725 cabinets. Its Mumbai campus hosts a cloud ecosystem for customers such as Alibaba Cloud, AWS, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, Oracle Cloud, SFDC, and more.
“With Maharashtra hosting nearly 60 per cent of India’s data center capacity, the addition of the AI ready MB3 data center, along with Equinix’s solar plant in Yavatmal, further strengthens Mumbai’s position as the country’s premier digital hub,” said Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
MB3 achieves 100 per cent renewables coverage and recently commissioned a 26.4 MWp group captive solar project in India under a long-term renewable energy agreement with CleanMax. The project is expected to generate approximately 41.4 million kWh of clean energy annually, reducing over 30,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
“The Union Budget 2026 proposals, including a tax holiday for global cloud providers leveraging India-based data center infrastructure and the introduction of safe harbor provisions, are viewed as strong policy enablers that reinforce the country’s position as a trusted global digital hub,” said Manoj Paul, Managing Director, India, Equinix.
Globally, Equinix operates 280 data centers across 77 markets in 36 countries, serving over 10,500 leading businesses and enabling their digital transformation.
