India’s entry into Pax Silica, a US-led initiative to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals, marks an important step in strengthening Indo-US ties. China currently dominates the refining of most strategic minerals and accounts for a vast share of rare-earth permanent magnet production, which has huge geopolitical implications.
In this backdrop, participation in Pax Silica could reinforce India’s domestic efforts such as the IndiaAI initiative and the National Critical Mineral Mission. However, while collaboration with the U.S. is strategically beneficial, India must remain cautious.

The article “How Hindalco is weaving a revival of an ancient silk art” shows the sensitivity of the company officials.
The Dhokra art of Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkhand, leather puppetry of Andhra Pradesh and Chittara art of Karnataka are facing extinction due to lack of patronage and government support.
Preserving ancient arts plays a key role in fostering community identity.
In this background the officials of Hindalco deserve a pat on the back for encouraging the artisans. Other big companies should emulate Hindalco.

It is with reference to the article ‘WTO must provide space for industrial policy flexibility’ (February 25).
The path of industrial development often faces challenges such as limited resources, technology gaps and market access barrier.
Policy flexibility in WTO is essential to manage contractual gaps in trade agreements, also to support industrial development and manage supply chain risks.
These policy flexibilities will enable developing countries to implement reforms gradually, provide necessary public policy space and balance national interests with global trade.
WTO agreements can not cover every future scenario.
Policy flexibilities allow its member countries to adopt compatible norms and pursue industrial policies that foster technological growth.
