Welcome move

The changes approved by the Union Cabinet in the guidelines on investments from countries sharing a land border with India (LBCs) are welcome.

At a time when strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities is a national priority, the government could adopt a calibrated and flexible approach towards Chinese investments, particularly through joint ventures with Indian partners that ensure technology transfer and domestic value creation. These policy changes are likely to encourage greater foreign direct investment (FDI), improve access to advanced technologies and deepen India’s integration with global supply chains.

Oil slick

This refers to ‘How persistently high oil prices could impact India’s vulnerable economy’ (March 12). As revealed in this report, India’s current oil stocks are likely to last for 20- 25 days, a grim scenario.

Notably, gas supply shortages have already begun hitting industries and consumers, with no end in sight as yet about extant Israel-US- Iran conflict. India may soon find itself on a highly slippery pitch.

Ethanol economy

Apropos the Editorial ‘Ethanol drive’ (March 12), an ethanol economy can significantly reduce India’s dependence on crude oil imports while creating rural employment. Instead of relying on food crops like sugarcane, maize, or rice, agricultural waste such as crop residues, husks, and straw can be converted into ethanol. This not only prevents stubble burning and environmental damage but also provides farmers with an additional income stream. Establishing decentralized ethanol plants across rural areas would generate jobs, promote cleaner energy, and strengthen energy security. By turning waste into wealth, India can achieve sustainable growth, reduce pollution, and empower its agricultural sector in a circular economy framework. In India, two-wheelers dominate personal transport, at present only 10 per cent ethanol blended (E10) petrol. If it is increased to E20, like in cars can have a large impact on energy security.
