Maharashtra has just overtaken Tamil Nadu in terms of total renewable energy capacity, to occupy the third position among States, after Gujarat and Rajasthan.
As at the end of August 2025, Maharashtra had a total renewable energy installed capacity of 26,929 MW, overtaking Tamil Nadu’s 26,194 MW. Tamil Nadu, once the No.1 State in renewable energy, has slipped to the fourth rank; Gujarat (39,275 MW) and Rajasthan (39,014 MW) take the first two positions.
Karnataka, which has been seeing substantial RE capacity additions in the last few years, is close behind Tamil Nadu, with 24,816 MW.
However, TN has seen the highest increase — 45 per cent – in generation from renewable energy sources among all States in April-August 2025. Generation rose to 26.2 billion units from 18.1 BU in the corresponding period of last year. Karnataka raised its generation by 35 per cent to 26 BU, while Gujarat, with 30 BU and Rajasthan at 30 BU, increased their RE generation by 31.5 per cent and 23.7 per cent, respectively.
Himachal Pradesh, which has practically no wind or solar capacity but has plenty of hydro power, comes third in RE-based electricity generation, producing 27.6 BU in April-Aug this year, up 4.2 per cent from the same period last year.
