Rupee worries

This refers to ‘Test of rupee resilience “(May 21). Though RBI intervention has made some positive changes in the value of the rupee, the dollar remains strong impacting BoP and the current account.

The persisting geopolitical tensions and resulting interruptions in demand and supply are leading to an inflationary spiral. Despite the depreciating value of the rupee, exporters are unable to capitalise on the opportunity on account of the rising input costs for manufacturing goods.

Apart from the sale of dollars by the RBI, import of goods other than for necessities needs to be drastically curtailed outflow of dollars.

Raising the interest rate on FCNR deposits and making equities, derivatives and debt securities are crucial to attract investment inflows.

Fair recovery norms

Apropos ‘RBI revises loan recovery norms after feedback ‘(May 21).

The RBI’s revised draft amendments are a welcome step to protect borrowers from harassment.

The proposed rules on mobile phone disabling tools, conduct of lenders and engagement of recovery agents address several long-standing customer concerns.

Fixing timelines for restoration of device functions or compensation will enhance accountability among regulated entities.

Restrictions on the timing and manner of recovery calls will help safeguard customer dignity and privacy.

However, these stricter directions will be meaningful only if recovery agencies are closely monitored and violations are acted upon promptly.

Charging thrust

Apropos “Taking charge” (May 21).

The need to expand EV charging infrastructure under the PM E-DRIVE scheme is clear, especially as crude oil prices keep reminding us of our import dependence. Yet the real bottleneck remains the fragmented standards and app ecosystem that frustrates ordinary users.

For EVs to become truly practical, charging stations must be fully vehicle-agnostic, allowing any car or two-wheeler to plug in without hassle. PSUs should focus on dense, reliable networks within a three-kilometre radius in cities while mandating open platforms for booking and payment.

Simple, uniform norms at the hardware level, backed by solar integration where possible, would go a long way in building user confidence and accelerating adoption.
