Shining light on India’s corporate bond market

NSE’s recent Market Pulse report brings out key facts and figures about India’s corporate debt market. As companies have relied more on bank loans, the corporate bond market remains modest. This is true on comparison with advanced economies, some emerging economy peers and also on comparison with India’s own sovereign debt market. Corporate bonds account for just over one-fifth of the country’s total bond market, with the banking sector responsible for almost half of it. In the last 15 years, as a percentage of GDP, while equity market has gained over 30 percentage points, the corporate debt market lags behind with a gain of barely 5 percentage points
