The scale of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in West Bengal is underlined not just by seats won, but by the sheer margins it has secured across constituencies, pointing to a deep and broad-based shift in voter alignment.

Among the standout results, BJP’s Anandamay Barman emerged as the election’s star performer, winning the Matigara-Naxalbari (25) seat by a margin of over 1 lakh votes, defeating Shankar Malakar of the All India Trinamool Congress. The result is emblematic of a wider trend: of the BJP’s 146 winning candidates, as many as 105 out of 119 secured victory margins exceeding 10,000 votes, while only two candidates scraped through with margins of less than 1,000 votes.

Even some of the party’s most prominent faces were not immune to tighter contests. Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari won from Nandigram by a margin of less than 10,000 votes after all 19 rounds of counting, according to Election Commission data. As of 8.40 pm, the BJP had won 146 seats, with 62 candidates still leading.

High-margin victories were recorded across the State. In Dabgram-Fulbari, BJP’s Sikha Chatterjee won by 97,715 votes, polling 1,66,300 votes. Other significant wins in the 70,000–90,000 margin range included Tarak Nath Chatterjee from Krishnanagar Uttar (83), Joyel Murmu from Habibpur (43), and Utpal Brahmacharo from Kaliaganj (34).

A further eight candidates, including Nishith Pramanik, Ashim Kumar Biswas, Sukanta Biswas and Gopal Chandra Saha, won by margins between 50,000 and 70,000 votes. In addition, 31 BJP candidates registered margins in the 30,000–50,000 bracket, while 59 candidates won by margins between 10,000 and 30,000 votes. Actor-turned-politician Rupa Ganguly won the Sonarpur Dakshin seat by over 35,000 votes.

At the narrower end, 11 BJP candidates won with margins between 5,000 and 10,000 votes. Only five candidates recorded victories with margins below 5,000 votes, including Nirmal Kumar Dhara from Indus (257), who won by just 900 votes, and Subhash Patra from Raina (261), who secured victory by 834 votes in closely fought contests where both candidates polled over 1 lakh votes each.

Taken together, the distribution of victory margins underscores not only the BJP’s electoral sweep but the depth of its penetration across constituencies, with decisive leads in a majority of seats and only a handful of close contests.
